My personal feelings toward crimes are, an eye for an eye. If you kill someone you should be killed. If you rape someone, well throw that fucking piece of trash in jail and let the lifers have fun with them. You steal something you should have to pay for it 10 fold.

Obviously it would never work, but I don't disagree with lethal injection or the electric chair. If you ask me they should bring back hanging, while barbaric the theatrical effect helped to stall crime back then. The problem with the death penalty is those that are convicted yet innocent. There are lots of cases of this and for those people I am very sad.

It's not what the thread is about but capital punishment is observably ineffective in curtailing crime rates, signed every European country ever with lower crime and no death penalty.

Anyway, I'm not a father, so I haven't had a brain-altering epiphany regarding heartbeats and such, but I maintain it's just another threshold that ultimately means nothing. As Quadtard put it (to my surprise, he's growing on me here) a single organ isn't meaningful enough. A heart on its own, even a beating one, is just as useless as any other organ on its own. We've come to associate heartbeats with life, but there are plenty of other necessary organs that aren't as showboaty as hearts and are just as essential.

None of this is to say abortion is a decision to be made lightly. I'm just saying it's a decision that can be made.

Sure I agree that every organ has an important part, and the heart may not be the most important. It is to a father or mother sort of the life line in their eyes. Not necessarily romanticized or built-up as you say. Maybe for some, it was the turning point for me when reality snapped in and I said "Oh fuck, time to get shit ready."

If in the ultrasound they were to show me the kidney I would think it was pretty sweet too, but the kidney doesn't jump out at you and say he check out this flashy shit I can do. Maybe for a trained eye it might but I am no M.D. that is for damn sure. (Wish I had gone to college ROFL)

I think another reason the heart is a good baseline is it's an easily visible and detectable indicator that there is a living thing. When I saw it at 7 weeks it looked like a tiny strobe light. This week it actually looked like a heart - movement, chambers and all. When I saw the kidneys and stuff in the sonogram they just looked like black dots... no way to identify them other than training. They don't move. They don't make noise.

Edit: Yea, I just repeated what he said. Suck it.

I am a mother of 3. I am pro-choice. It raises a lot of eyebrows among my friends since I am a conservative and go to church regularly. But I am also a woman and being pregnant is not a walk in the park.

If a person doesn't want kids, they shouldn't have kids. While I think it is repugnant when people use it as birth control, I figure that if there is an ever-after, they'll be lounging somewhere quite toasty. It isn't as simple as "having sex means you are agreeing to a baby." There is rape, "pressure" similar to rape, being a stupid teenager, being uneducated on how babies happen, being too poor to afford contraceptives, contraceptives failing, health at risk, etc.

I've seen those little ultrasound pictures and have 3 adorable kids of my own. But I am also a woman and know what it is to be pregnant. Who am I to make that choice for someone else? I obviously chose life, but that doesn't mean I think everyone else should have to also.
