I don't like squidgoat portraits that are overly anthropomorphized (usually of women known to the artist). That, to me, is creepy and unoriginal.

In-game, squidgoat are shown as having translucent irises and opalescent eyes. They do not have fingernails - the tips of their fingers are radially symmetrical - and their arms are somewhat longer in proportion to their torsos than humans.

I think that what makes squidgoat such a success is that they are novel. They are not like any other race in WoW, but their animations appear plausible and graceful, and their features are distinct and seem textured, as opposed to blood elves. I think in art, they should be portrayed the same way - not as humans with superficial alien features, but as something else entirely. They don't just have tails and horns, or pointed ears, or some other superficial oddity projected onto a basically human figure - their outline and facial profile are distinct and original. This is central to their appeal.

Azazel's art would be a lot better if he stopped making them look like Koreans, made their armor more, uh, modest, and stopped giving them pastel-colored half-inch-long nails. I've actually seriously considered commissioning him to make a portrait of Aestu like that; I've already chosen the setting. My choice should be obvious, but I'm sure no one will guess it.

Yeah they definitely have fingernails, according to the wowhead model viewer. They're blue humans with goat limbs, horns, tails, and ear tentacles, and their faces are no less plausibly human than even the human female faces.
