If i need a drug test to get/keep a job, you need a drug test to get/keep welfare.

Counterpoint: Drug Tests for both jobs and welfare are utter bullshit because what you do in your spare time should have little to no bearing on your job (the exception being if you come to work drunk/high, which you're gonna get fired for anyways).

I don't know anyone who has ever had to get a drug test for their job. I've personally worked at a company where I've had background checks because of working with confidential customer data, an intern at a large telecomm company right now. I know nurses, government employees, airline employees, people working with some of the largest tech companies in the world, people that have require security clearance from the Department of National Defense, and all sorts retail/restaurant/etc jobs.

Are they actually as common in the USA as the internets makes them sound?

Certain jobs have conflict of interests. IE cops and heroin.

Also, if i ran a hospital, i wouldn't want a patient to die(and i get sued) because one of my nurses or doctors wasn't all there due to substance abuse.

Wanna do drugs? do like that runningback from the dolphins. quit and go smoke your brains out, or quit drugs and work a job that makes your quality of living go up.

People with obvious drug conflicts will weed themselves out eventually, same with people getting high on the job.

Not to mention that most companies that drug test usually do it at the beginning of employment and thats it (its too expensive to do it regularly). These hypotheticals that you're making can easily happen with drug testing, they'll just happen when the employee is well-established.

people with drug problems can cause a lot of damage before they're caught fucking up on the job though. thats why i think a piss test once or twice a month is fine, i'd even encourage more, if it wasn't such an inconvenience.

I know if i was an employer i wouldnt want my employees to abuse any illegal substances even if they did it on weekends and it never entered my workplace. it brings a stain on the company as a whole, and can eventually fuckerize (MY WORD JUBBER FU) their life, and leak into work life of course. But anything legal shouldnt have any effect. IDC if my secretary was taking HGH or Roids. That would be scary, but none of my buisiness.

If any tests, should just scan exclusively for illegal drugs or anything that has direct impact on their work. IE baseball players and roids.

I agree with the OP. You're abusing drugs then you get no welfare check. My reasoning - I don't want my tax dollars subsidizing your substance abuse habits. Also, if you're on some government assistance to simply survive then where do you find the money to buy your drugs?

I don't disagree, but who's going to pay for the drug tests?

So you want taxes to pay for the drug testing which will allocate money you already don't want to be spending? Don't get me wrong, I don't think it makes much sense for someone to get a welfare check and spend it on crack, I just don't think it's feasible to monitor.

just make the people on welfare have to use their welfare money to pay for the drug test. they're not that expensive anyway, and if they can't spend the money wisely enough to allow a drug test, they don't deserve welfare.
