"There's" would have been correct if there was only one boomkin. "There are" would be the plural term.

I was just grading an English paper and still had my grammar nazi hat on. ;)

ITT: SS of Aestu making a grammatical error, taken by Aestu himself. I was wrong, I guess Aestu can admit when he is mistaken.

http://www.voanews.com/learningenglish/ ... 10512.html

However, my usage is actually correct. It's called an accusative-infinitive. The object of "there's" is "typhooning".

If I were to remove the indirect object of typhooning (the boomkins), the sentence would read:
"We're winning WG because there's spam typhooning outside the breech."

The meaning would be the same and the sentence would still be correct. We are winning because of the spam typhooning, not the boomkins.

Go to the back of the class, please.

Oh dear.

"There's four boomkins" is socially acceptable albeit grammatically... informal. Not entirely correct, but you are communicating effectively enough.

"There're four boomkins" is grammatically correct but sounds very awkward and isn't likely to be used. You can debate what is more important, being technically correct* or not sounding like you have a dick in your mouth.

"There's a group of four boomkins" is both grammatically correct and not awkward. The noun being modified is "group", singular.

Either way, no one cares.

......

*The Futurama Theorem on Technical Correctness might be useful in this debate.

None of which is relevant because we've established "the boomkins" are not the object of the sentence.

I wouldn't say that has been established as much as asserted.

However, that was also asserted after I started writing that post.

winning*
Looks like a slam dunk to me.

And actually, after reading your link, it appears to me that they are saying not that "there's" is correct but that more and more people are using it incorrectly in that manner and that it is evolving into becoming correct and accepted. Unless I missed something. Therefore, making your link pointless.
