ROFL <3

My dad used to tell people that statistics told him that it was perfectly normal for 3 of his 15 brothers and sisters to be Chinese. After all, 1 out of every 5 children born in the world are Chinese....

Any time he'd see someone with 5 children he'd ask where the Indian and Chinese one were... He has a really odd sense of humor.

Anyhow, like with most things, the context is what is most important. Are you going to be traveling to a specific region? Do you need the language in the course of your job? Etc.

Me and my friends just used to always joke about if we spent half of the time of our /played, we could have learned several new languages. So I just want to learn one as something to do and I think it'd be interesting.

Honestly, take all the classes you want, computer program, books on tape, whatever. Nothing will prepare you for actually living in a area where he language is spoke. I finished highschool years ago able to speak basic Spanish, but any of my travels to spanish-speaking countries taught me the slang of the area; different pronunciations, conjugations, etc. Same with French, before I spent 4 months in Senegal, I learned french. The french I leanred was Parisian french - no one there spoke anything even close to it, and I essentially had to relearn the language.

Should over-seas not be an option, I liked Pimsleur, if you spend alot of time driving and don't mine talking to yourself in the car, it's pretty effective.

Like someone else said, base your language decision on an area you're going to, or would like to someday visit. If your goal is to spend a year in an area with Spanish(ish) speakers, learn basic spanish, it's a nice way to reinforce the goal you have every day.

Well, since I usually am that guy...

While it's admirable that you want to learn another language, what's the point? Most of the places you'll ever go outside of this country are full of people that speak English because most of the places Americans go are tourist traps for Americans. It's better to let those nice native translators make a buck or two and not have your shoddy pronunciation ridiculed by the same people that will mock you for being an ugly American.

Give it a few years, Europe will eventually go to shambles, we'll have to get our act together and go fix it, and we'll be back on top so that everyone will have to learn English and kiss our butts again.

Actually, the girl who is teaching me Russian told me that she liked my American accent when I say Russian words. It's similar to how American girls like guys that speak with a French accent. It's exotic to them.

So basically if you want girls to swoon over you for no reason, learn their language but not well enough to sound like you're from there.

Learn either a Romance language or german, mainly because if you learn any romance language, you're able to construct basic sentences in the other two (ex. my momma is pretty good at french, went to italy, and they understood what she was trying to say just by talking in french). The same goes for German, Dutch, and (iirc) all of the Scandinavian languages. When I went to Amsterdam, we went to a couple places with menus only in Dutch and with my German I could read the menu with little to no problem.

I was actually thinking about German just because I think it'd be fun. That and I could listen to Rammstein and understand what is being said.

The French working in Italy thing only applies if you're on the mainland. In Sicily, they're more likely to respond to English than to French as I found out, and a ton of them speak only Italian.

It's nice though. And not even close to the way most Italian-Americans picture it. For starters, there's electricity and running water.

I've been told that Italians are some of the loudest and rudest people on the planet, which explains why New York and Jersey are such shitholes.
