So today, I went to Goodwill, and bought a lamp - a big, impressive bronze desk lamp. I could, of course, simply have bought a brand-new, mass-produced, Chinese-made thing from Target, but that's not my way - I wanted something impressive, premium-looking, and I refuse to pay retail.

So I bought it for $15, along with two pillows for $2.50 each, and dragged it home. It was heavy, a good 10-15 pounds. The shade got slightly off-centered, and I'll have to adjust it back into place later.

I expected cleaning it off would be a simple, superficial polish, so I got out some paper towels and Q-tips and a bottle of rubbing alcohol. But swabbing away at the bronze, I was surprised as sheets and sheets of this brown gook kept soiling towel after towel.

Initially, I had thought part of the upper section of the lamp was painted brown. It wasn't paint - it was a thick coating of...soot?

Regardless, I kept at it. After a good hour, I managed to polish it into a reasonably presentable condition. It will require further work, of course.

It may seem strange that I am so pleased with this small thing. I enjoy getting the very best, piece by piece, from obscure locales. It's more rewarding than just opening a box from the retailer.

I'm very pleased with how it looks in my room. Now I need to acquire a bookshelf, a new table, and some bookends. Nothing but the best, at pennies on the dollar, of course.

So my question remains: what is that gook? Cigarette smoke built up over decades? It was horrible to clean =P

I am both sad and relieved that no genie popped out.

This.

I bet it was something like cigarette smoke Aestu. That shit builds up over time...my parents bought a house from a couple who were heavy smokers and had lived their for years. They had to spend a fortune getting the place cleaned...it was disgusting to see the difference once the walls had been washed.

The chair in the last picture looks like it's designed to be uncomfortable.

I am disturbed by the pillows from Goodwill thing... You do realize that you can get brand new, hypoallergenic pillows from a store like JC Penneys for less than $3 when they are on sale. There are few things I find more skeezy than used pillows. I even travel with my own pillow. (And sheets!)

Great job on the lamp though. My BFF took me into my first Goodwill store on Saturday and we both scored lamps as well :) Mine was a brand new, hand-painted, and only $5.

That there's a pretty snappy looking lamp.

None of the pictures he posted were of bare wall, though.

So the other day, the zipper tab on my wallet broke off the zipper bus from metal fatigue. I am of the "use it till it disintegrates" consumerist school, and in any case I never buy new leather products. So I set out in search of something to attach to the zipper bus, so I didn't have to pinch it awkwardly to open the wallet. I went to Goodwill again.

I bought this for $5.
(Rear view).

It's made of heavy stainless steel; I liked the decent heft, and the chain was well-made too. I attached it to my wallet zipper so I could pull it open by the chain.

I wondered: who are these people, and where is it from? Google answered.
So, uh, some guy went and got this keychain from a third world battery manufacturer based in Morocco. And now it's owned by a megalomanical 25-year-old living in Boston.

I like owning things like this because it gives my life a sense of continuity and definition to own things that are not merely mass-produced but have a story to them. I especially enjoy acquiring objects previously owned by dead strangers.
