He was here when we broke up (over the phone since we're an hour apart), and he likes (liked?) Karen, which isn't weird since I had been dating her since he was 2...but he didn't say anything. He asked me if I was being serious. Only worry I have about him is that he'll do that thing kids do where he'll start hoping that I'll like his Mom again (no chance, she's a pig now even if she wasn't crazy). I'm not normally a long-term relationship kind of person, and I'm amazed I could spend 8 years with one person. It probably didn't hurt that I didn't want CJ seeing me jumping from one woman to another every other week. Karen was pretty swell, and it will probably be a few weeks or more before I think about spending time with anyone else. Then I'll be banging gutter skanks half my age like God intended, and all will be right with the universe.

How come you two split after so long? Without a marriage contract you guys must've had a great relationship to stay together for so long without fear of her taking half your shit.

Depending on the state/group of states, it may recognize common law marriage, which makes division of assets easier. Family courts exist to be wealthy, don't worry. It's always better for parties who decide to split to resolve shit on their own, because paying other people to do it gets expensive.

Even if you don't have a clear marriage contract.
