I can understand how some people feel like their vote doesn't matter. They elect one guy, only so another one can take the office because some campaign official "discovered" a box of ballots (oddly, all marked for the other guy) in the back of her car. Everyone remembers the hanging chads down in FL...and everyone, regardless of party, agrees that the whole fucking thing was shenanigans. How do you expect people to take the process seriously? It's not like officials in states like New York are purposely not sending out absentee ballots to troops in the field (a group that generally votes republican, what an odd coincidence) so that their ballots won't be back in time to be counted.

Whenever a republican wins a tight race, Democrats scream "VOTE FRAUD," but when someone says, "OK, let's fix that, here's some things we could do," all you hear is "LOLWTFBBQ, you can't make people show ID, it's an onerous burden."

Both parties cheat, but it's apparent which one has institutionalized the practice. It's a damn shame, too. What's it say about you and what you believe if you cheat to win an election?

Your Pal,
Jubber

What the fuck is with this "getting something done" bullshit? I'd prefer they not do anything. "Getting something done" gave us the stimulus (fail), Obamacare (fail), and too much of Nancy Pelosi's fugly over-stretched face-lift spouting "let them eat cake" and "you have to pass the bill so you can see what's in it" (was the fucking bill a box of goddamn Cracker Jacks?) on TV.

The only thing these assclowns need to "get done" is cutting the fucking budget, pulling their grubby fingers out of everyone's pies, and taking care of the business of government, which is most cases isn't much more than necessary regulation, operating a military, maintaining diplomatic staff and services, preparing for large scale emergencies/disasters, and maintaining "post roads." All the other bullshit that "gets done" is busy work to justify giving themselves a pay raise every year.

Getting shit done is how you stay competitive in the world. Getting shit done is how we won WW2, and how we beat the Soviets. Getting shit done is how we built a transcontinental railroad.

If you would like to live in a country without a functioning government, there are a lot of them available for you to move to.

Election day feels good man.

No because if we go to those countries, we'd get stoned to death for speaking out against the gov't.

Our government is "functioning." It's really all bullshit though.

Everything is cyclical. Republicans have control...pass a bunch of stuff...get bad PR, then the Dems take control....then they pass some stuff...get bad PR...then the Republicans take control.

You don't believe me? Look at our presidents in the last few decades

Reagan - Republican 1 term
Bush Senior - Republican 1 term
Clinton - Democrat - 2 terms
Bush Jr. - Republican 2 Terms
Obama - Democrat - 1st term

The pendulum just swings because our society is fucking retarded. Nothing ever gets done because congresses bicker and bicker, something gets passed, then a new party takes control and goes to work repealing everything that the other party passed.

Personally though I won't be voting today since I'm not registered in my state.

Also, I only care about Prop 19 in California, which looks like it won't pass anyway (again, because people are retarded).

America's political process is a shit hole of negative campaign advertising, hot-button issues that have no bearing on anything (who the fuck cares if your candidate is for/against abortion...Roe V Wade ISNT getting overturned), and just a clusterfuck of media bullshit.

If our founding fathers were alive today to see what the political process has become, they would shit themselves.

American politics has the unique dynamic of placing supreme power in the hands of the most poorly informed. In America, elections are won or lost on the swing vote - those who have so little information, such poor understanding, of any given topic, they haven't made up their mind until the day has come to vote or very nearly. And so we see candidates and narrow, organized interests spend enormous sums to influence those swing voters, who base their decisions in large part on these fifteen-second sound bites and appeals to the lowest common denominator. In practice, American politics is a stagnant morass with very little novel or genuine discourse, dominated by an impasse between closely balanced powers-that-be on opposing sides of issues, and the only real winner is the status quo.

For someone who is so adamant about not going with the status quo you certainly swallowed the institutional line on this one.

Both the amount and the role of independents is vastly, vastly over-rated. People are barely voting as it is, you think people who are wishy-washy on the candidates are more or less likely to vote? Motivating the base is way more important than garnering centrist votes (one only has to look at Bush's[Roves's] two elections).

And do you know what makes a candidate independent? Just asking them. Not who they have voted for in the past, not what party they registered for, but whether or not they feel independent at that time. What that means is all the polling they do is skewed, since a number of people might routinely vote d/r, but don't want to admit party affiliation, making independents seem like a much bigger block than they are.

You mean like how vote counting machines were found to be shipped with 200 votes already cast for Bush, or how they were double and triple counting votes in certain counties ending up with 2-300% of the people in the county voting for Bush? You were so close though, if you would have decided to just talk about both sides cheating instead of needing to be a cheerleader for the republicans you wouldn't have sounded like such a tool.

Oh and many people don't have ID in America (it's more common than you think), which would exclude people from voting, many of whom traditionally vote Democrat. IDs wouldn't make a difference anyway, while there may be a few people who are going to polling centers numerous times they aren't casting boxes full or votes or rigging electronic voting machines. Even if forced to show ID the 85 year olds that staff voting centers aren't going to be spotting the easily-made fakes that could be produced anyway.

Not at all. There are plenty of countries with no central government to speak of.

Hell, even countries like Afghanistan have a central government whose authority stretches all the way to the edge of the capital and not much further.

The problem is, however, that where government does not exist, the power vacuum does not go unfilled. It is usually filled by tribal leaders and warlords. The point being, shit will get done, but you won't really have much of a say in it.

I don't say any of this to encourage anyone to move to a third-world country, I'm just pointing out the abject inanity of wishing for a government incapable of governing. At best, it makes you a bitch of a country, and at worst a failed one.

Agreed, but Jubber's statement was celebrating the bullshit as a good thing. There's a reason China is going to have our ass over a barrel in the next few decades, and it's mostly because their government is efficient.

Authoritarian and horrid as well, and I wouldn't want to emulate it, but I think that just puts the onus on us to prove that we can also govern ourselves effectively, in a democratic system.

But that insists upon "getting shit done".

China's government is efficient because human life means dick when you have 1.5 billion people and you don't have to worry about running over the little guy.

I predict at least 60-70 gains for Republicans.

I think there will be some very close calls, such as Reid/Angle, possibly close with lOL'donnell in DE probably lose by 3 pts and maybe a dozen others as it was in the last election. Probably (but let's hope not) some lawsuits over elections within the hundreds/thousands of votes.

& it turns out Sarah Palin isn't Deathwing, I researched it myself :(
