You mean like how vote counting machines were found to be shipped with 200 votes already cast for Bush, or how they were double and triple counting votes in certain counties ending up with 2-300% of the people in the county voting for Bush? You were so close though, if you would have decided to just talk about both sides cheating instead of needing to be a cheerleader for the republicans you wouldn't have sounded like such a tool.

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. That's one of the reasons I said EVERYONE agrees that FL2000 was bullshit. I'm pretty sure I even specifically said "both sides cheat." How does that translate to "cheerleading" for republicans? I don't like it when they cheat, either. It's bullshit.

Oh and many people don't have ID in America (it's more common than you think), which would exclude people from voting, many of whom traditionally vote Democrat. IDs wouldn't make a difference anyway, while there may be a few people who are going to polling centers numerous times they aren't casting boxes full or votes or rigging electronic voting machines. Even if forced to show ID the 85 year olds that staff voting centers aren't going to be spotting the easily-made fakes that could be produced anyway.

You know that you're kinda-sorta-almost-pseudo-required to have some form of ID to prove who you are? One of the things I find funny about the "I cants affords me an ID" argument is that every plan I've seen that would mandate showing an ID at a polling place is accompanied with making it a policy to provide a basic ID free to legal residents. The reason the "oh the pitiful put-upon poor" crowd is really against it is because it would disenfranchise a major portion of their constituency: felons and illegal aliens...neither of whom are supposed to be voting anyway.

Speaking of narrow margins and felons...some conservative group in Minnesota is claiming that it can prove that the number of felons that voted (I guess they assume for Franken) is greater than the number of votes that gave Senator Franken the his win. I take that with a grain of salt considering the source, but it's not unbelievable. I still think it's acceptable that people see no point in participating in the system when it's (purposely?) broken to the point that your vote is negated by fraud and dishonesty.

Yeah, Congress is supposed to set budgets, declare war when needed, and defend the rights of their states' citizens and interests of their states.

The President is supposed to be the last line of defense for the Constitution, and Commander in Chief.

The last decades Congress(moreso the Senate) has only been power grabbing for the central gov, passing on their financial responsibilities to the treasury and federal reserve, and allowed the president to be the empire manager conducting wars and pretty much being a corporatist executive. They aren't doin their jerbs theyre supposed to be durin what the derk

I wasn't required an ID to vote, I came in and told them my name, they asked me my address and I signed a sheet of paper.

Yeah, that argument is stupid.

Our government is "functioning." It's really all bullshit though.

Everything is cyclical. Republicans have control...pass a bunch of stuff...get bad PR, then the Dems take control....then they pass some stuff...get bad PR...then the Republicans take control.

You don't believe me? Look at our presidents in the last few decades

Reagan - Republican 1 term
Bush Senior - Republican 1 term
Clinton - Democrat - 2 terms
Bush Jr. - Republican 2 Terms
Obama - Democrat - 1st term

The pendulum just swings because our society is fucking retarded. Nothing ever gets done because congresses bicker and bicker, something gets passed, then a new party takes control and goes to work repealing everything that the other party passed.

Personally though I won't be voting today since I'm not registered in my state.

Also, I only care about Prop 19 in California, which looks like it won't pass anyway (again, because people are retarded).

America's political process is a shit hole of negative campaign advertising, hot-button issues that have no bearing on anything (who the fuck cares if your candidate is for/against abortion...Roe V Wade ISNT getting overturned), and just a clusterfuck of media bullshit.

If our founding fathers were alive today to see what the political process has become, they would shit themselves.

Something totally stupid, but: Reagan served 2 terms in office :)

Our country is split pretty evenly between Republicans and Democrats, so it is no surprise that political office would flip flop between the two. Comparing presidential power with congressional and judicial power is more telling of the political climate.

I voted, and am taking my husband to vote tonight. Crossing my fingers that Governor Moonbeam doesn't get elected again, but I am not going to hold my breath.

For those with bad reading comprehension who seem to think I'm suggesting the government has no legitimate role to play (not what I said at all), allow me to highlight how I didn't say that:

All the other bullshit that "gets done" is busy work to justify giving themselves a pay raise every year.

You'd rather the government not do anything? I mean, with Republicans making it so you need 60 votes to pass anything via the filibuster, you're getting that already.

IIRC most of "Obamacare" doesn't even go into full swing until something like 2014. So far, the only things that have really gone into effect is that you can stay on your parent's health insurance until you're 26 and kids can't get dropped from healthcare (OH GOD WHAT SOCIALISTS). How has it already failed?

Quote:

Which Republicans won't do. From being alive under Bush for 8 years, its been beyond obvious that the only things that get cut are what the Republicans don't like (read: social programs are cut in favor of military contracts)

I really liked how you said this. What in your obviously Conservi-Blinder mind are "necessary regulations"?

I lol'ed. Jubber, you are SUCH an idiot that I want to skin you alive, but at least you're smart enough not to bother voting when you know you're an idiot. Lord knows we don't need any more idiot's making decisions in this country.

I actually don't like the fact that kids can stay on their parents insurance until 26. by 26, "kids" should have a good enough job to pay for their own insurance, or have it from their college tuition(for which you can get grants)

I think it is funny when people bitch about healthcare being too expensive, all while sitting in their apartment with cable, a flat screen, fancy cell phone, eating out all the time, etc. Healthcare is affordable if you prioritize it and pay for insurance. What they really mean is that Healthcare isn't free. Tell the doctors that pay almost half a million dollars to pay for school that their services should be free :)

And Mayo, I love you, but seriously, you need to stop raging against Republicans all the time. We aren't as stupid as your teachers tell you we are ;)

I'm ok with certain things being taken care of by the government, like breast exams and physicals, but not every snot nosed kid NEEDS anti biotics and shit over a random cold.

the government should become LESS of a drug dealer, not MORE.

China's government is efficient because human life means dick when you have 1.5 billion people and you don't have to worry about running over the little guy.

I don't find much common ground with Usd about the world outside America, but he's right on here.

Another lame (but true) Churchill quote about democracy: "Democracy is the worst system of government, except for all the others."

America, believe it or not, has one of the most efficient and corruption-free governments in the world. While there is a great deal of corporate influence, overt bribery and graft is very rare, because our country went to enormous lengths to stamp it out back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. China, on the other hand, hasn't gone through that historical process, nor has Western Europe.

The Chinese government doesn't have the breadth of responsibility and accountability the American government has. American corporations commit abuses but these pale comparison to what can be easily done in China.

Americans are widely seen, by both foreigners and themselves, as a wild, violent, gun-loving frontier people, but the truth is Americans are some of the most law-abiding people in the world. Stereotypes aside, we resolve our problems with lawsuits and through the legal process, not bribes to public officials and family influence. If you doubt this, look at China, Mexico, Italy, hell, even Britain (class society) or France.

I made friends with some Chinamen last semester. I asked them about their homeland, about their government, and they seriously kept looking over their shoulders while discussing it in halting terms. "You can't really disagree, because...yeah, the army...and people who are in families with people in the army...they get ahead..." They thought America was a breath of fresh air, that this country's freedoms and opportunities are great - and they are from the best part of China, the urban East Coast. The next semester, one of them was volunteering to get people to register vote, and he approached me in the cafeteria and asked if I was registered. I laughed and said no, I wasn't interested. He looked at me as if I was insane.

The "faceless bureaucracy" that sucks the budget dry is a myth.

The overwhelming majority of the federal budget goes to:
1. The military
2. Welfare
3. Social Security
4. Highways

The FDA, FCC, FBI, etc etc etc, is only a tiny percentage of the budget, and it's not why the country is drowning in red ink.

The folly of this is apparent when you look at other countries. Dualist polarization and see-sawing is a uniquely American political dynamic. The very few other countries that have such systems (England, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan) don't have the kind of rigid back-and-forth that we do.

This is half true. It would be more accurate to say that regarding government services. Medical care was more affordable a few decades ago, but insurance profit margins, material costs, and doctors' pay was lower.

The "my education is worth what I paid for it" bit is idiotic. Only a fool believes price and value is the same. Cuba, China, India, Iran, and Western Europe churn out doctors as good as ours for a fraction the price. Flatly, the belief that American doctors are somehow superior because of their "education" is testament to subconscious racism.
