On issues like this i have no choice but to listen to Amerikan comedians.

It seemed so plausible!

That's kinda my philosophy (I'd say I'm an agnostic atheist).

God or no, the universe is the way it is and that's the only option I have. I only think it matters if you believe in God, and you also think he's a petty asshole.

Not true. It effects societal norms, political decisions, etc. Gay marriage, stem cell research? There's many things it effects but I'm completely apathetic about religion one way or the other though so I couldn't make any sort of decent argument.

most of the time those things have nothing to do with religion when it comes to politicians, souless monsters they are. they just use religion to get the people too ignorant to do the research to form a proper opinion on their side.

I'm not saying that religion is a lie, I'm just saying that people using it to push a political issue often distort it into a lie.

Both sides of this argument don’t understand how the others fail to understand something so obvious and simple. But all this really comes down to is our predisposal to separate ourselves, and try to elevate ourselves over “those” people. Whichever side you’re on, you’ll never bring anything to the table that will convince anyone who is firm in their beliefs. Most of the loudest debaters appear to me to be people who have put the least real thought into the subject. Most fall into one of two camps: those who blindly follow the religious teachings of their people/parents/friends and another who think it shows how intelligent they are to scoff at an idea of a God for which they see no proof ( especially if their parents are believers).

Quietly putting some real thought into one’s beliefs (or none) and following your conclusions while allowing others to follow theirs is the way to go. When you reach the point where you don’t feel the need to try to teach another what a dumbass he is when he tries to tell you about his (dis)belief, you will have it. Extra points if you can be genuinely happy for him if he feels something positive in his certainty. It is so easy, when pressed, to say, “I hold my beliefs privately.”

Disclaimer: I am not accusing anyone here of not carefully considering their positions on this topic before posting. I respect all of your opinions, even while I think expressing them offers no possibility of convincing anyone that what they believe is erroneous. Wow…I really sound like an old fucker with this post. /sigh

Passively accepting others' opinions will never change the world, and it's totally possible to do so.

I know I'm right, and I don't need to sugarcoat or prevaricate. It is simply a matter of convincing others to accept the facts - or forcing the worldview I wish to implement on them. And that, too, is very possible. Willful individuals have managed to impose their visions on recalcitrants in the past and will continue to do so into the future.

Not that I am at odds with your opinion on God, but I would say that a religious person would say this exact same thing, and have just as much evidence to back it up.

I don't mean to draw an equivalence in the soundness of what is believed (or known), but simply in the certainty with which it is believed.

Perhaps the best argument I've seen against believing in God didn't try to prove he didn't exist or state it as known fact, but rather to draw an analogy to other mythical creatures. Do you believe in Leprechauns? No, of course not. Can you prove they don't exist? No, of course not. Is that fact alone enough reason to suggest they are actually real? No, of course not.

The same can be said of any creature or being that someone wants to believe in but can show no evidence of.

There is no rational basis to believe in God.

There is a rational basis to know there is no God, which is reading about the origins of the stories about the gods and understanding how these lies have proven useful to the powerful.

Knowing these reasons I can feel quite confident in my knowledge that God is a lie, because I know the history of the lie and why it endures.
