The meaning and the value of life is whatever you ascribe to it. There is no right answer.
What driven people find is an obsession, doesn't really matter what it is, just that it interests them. The most successful of these turn that obsession into some goal, and then work backwards to how to get to that goal, constantly improving and tweaking it along the way.
It isn't an esoteric "what's the meaning of life" that gives them purpose, it's an interest pursued, the knowledge gained and the experiences had. Maybe the God debate gave Aquinas purpose, but if that's what framed my life, I'd probably have ended it long ago.
