There are no sacred cows in comedy, gentlemen. Dead babies are no laughing matter, but dead baby jokes, while dumb as hell, will make you blow milk out your nose. Then you'll be all like, "WTF, I wasn't even drinking milk?!?!?!"

It's understandable that some subject matter will cause some adverse reaction, but we're all...sort of like...adults here.

Jubber

So we view this the same way. I also am against medications for depression, because in all the studies they've conducted the meds are only slightly more effective than placebo pills. Often, depression is self-replicating and can be defeated with an attitude adjustment...I know that's how I defeated depression. They put me on zoloft, I took it for a while...then just had a long discussion with one of my closest friends, realized I was just being selfish and ignoring all the great things in my life...so I dusted myself off, got a job, and stopped being depressed,

It doesn't negate the illusion of despair that depression, bipolar and mental illness can bring upon some unfortunate soul however.

Very true, suicides for this case are truly sad. I think it's essential that we have systems in place to avoid this though.

Let me clarify my intense anger regarding this subject and the misconceptions and stigma that encompass it.

I have bipolar disorder. Yes, I've thought seriously about suicide. Yes, I've been hospitalized multiple times for attempts, which failed, and that I now am thankful as FUCK they failed.

Suicide is not a failed attempt at life. Suicide is a mindfuck, one's life is not usually ever so terrible that suicide should be considered. During moments of intense despair though, sometimes actions can outweigh logic. Just as murder is usually rarely justified, in moments of intense anger people can make a stupid decision to take a life. The difference is that where suicide is involved, the life you are taking is your own. You do not get jailed for the remainder of your life to regret your mistake, your decision, your failure, whatever you should choose to call it.

Once you're gone, that's it. I am not a believer in the afterlife.

And let me tell you guys, it doesn't feel good to read threads like this pre-edit by Azelma.

I won't be so cocky as to say every day is a struggle, but that's just me. Some people I am certain have it worse. I am on medication as a treatment for my depressing symptoms. It's not the only answer, but it is a part of one.

Just take it from someone that actually experiences it, suicide and depression are some SERIOUS SHIT.

There's a difference between not caring about people who commit suicide and saying that they should kill themselves because they are taking up your oxygen.

Back on topicish: If I knew someone at my campus was participating in this and I saw them, I would give them a hug and thank them for making the right decision. But Azelma, sometimes people will do their suicide attempt incorrectly or someone interrupt them before it becomes fatal.

I've attempted suicide twice. Once was when I tried to slash the artery in my left wrist using a razor, and seeing as how I have limited knowledge regarding human physiology I did not get the artery before the ambulance arrived that my parents called.

I am glad for that..I wouldn't be a father. I wouldn't have met my girlfriend. I wouldn't have saved a spanish woman from drowning in Ocean City, MD when I was vacationing.

There is a reason you are alive, whether you believe it's part of a divine plan or whether you make your own reasons for living is your choice.

I don't subscribe to the divine plan theory, so every day I embrace life with my own reasons for living.

Working in Law Enforcement I have seen a few of these. In both a corrections setting and in world settings.

It's not a topic to joke about sure, but a topic that should always be open to touch base on.

Theres so many reasons not to do this it's unreal... you never know how much you end up hurting others when you decide something like this... it's almost selfish. I'm sure these people don't that this but at the same time... they are not really thinking about anyone else. I've seen guys get married behind bars and weeks later commit suicide... when there wife shows up on visitation day, it's a hard thing to tell someone.

I have seen many situations of, "wow, why?" It's not something you can really explain and you aren't sure whats going through peoples minds when they decide this... or what even makes it get to this point. I don't think even people who survive these kind of things are completely honest with what goes through the mind of someone committing the act.

People who have been through a loved one or friend that has decided to take their life, I'm sorry... you have all of my respect because it's a very hard thing to go through. I myself have lost a grandfather who decided to do this when I was about 10 years old... its tough to swallow.

@Battletard

Thank you for sharing, and I am truly sorry that in my moment of twisted dark humor "FUBUers will think this is funny" logic, I didn't consider that there are probably people on this board with real experience with suicide and depression.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's interesting to me is the various reasons that people attempt suicide, and how in a sick way our society glorifies it.

"What do you mean Azelma??"

Well, consider things like what happened to that gay kid at Rutgers. He posts on his facebook that he's going to jump off a bridge because his roomate videotaped him having a homosexual encounter. Society takes it, puts it all over ABC news, and talks about "bullying" and how sad it all is. Simply a juicy news story....but it will cause copycat suicides...you watch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_of_Tyler_Clementi

Consider what happens in countries like Japan where success and family honor are so serious that hundreds of students kill themselves every year because they didn't score high enough on tests. Ironically, many choose the exact same area to commit suicide in:

http://boingboing.net/2010/10/25/japans ... res-1.html

I just wonder if sometimes our society asks all the wrong questions when it comes to suicide.

Yeah, I have no doubt I'll be trolled and have that story used against me but if I've reached even one person than i dont care.

And I agree with the whole glorifying it thing...suicide is not cool anymore than having AIDS is cool. Emo and Scene kids have really discredited legitimate mental health issues and made it a popular trend to bash those that suffer from them.

No need, on my behalf, but accepted nonetheless. I realize, as I said, the irreverence that is inherent on our forums, and among our group. I know that none of you REALLY think that suicide is funny. However, I also know that I felt a quick flash when I read your post, and thought that others might react more strongly. I won't list the suicides/attempts that have touched my life but I think I might be particularly sensitive, right now (the most recent was 3 weeks ago).

Azelma wrote:
I just came to the conclusion that it's a selfish act (for how it hurts those you love most), and simply quitting on life. Is anyone's life really that bad, that ending it all is the best and only option?

Suicide does feel selfish for the survivors. Where can I focus my anger? How could they not love me enough to not do this, or know how much I loved them? Is their life that bad? Of course not, to the rational. But, we can't understand the overwhelming pain magnified by mental issues that these people suffer from that drives them to such desperate measures.

Azelma wrote:
1. Your life probably isn't bad enough to ever justify suicide
2. Suicide is quitting.

These are clearly rational conclusions.

Not something I'd joke about in mixed company. The little people that type messages to me from inside my magic box (that would be you guys) aren't mixed company.

I know, Jubs. As I said, I'm just a little freshly butthurt from a recent hit. I don't mean to party poop. <3 you all.

I endorse and reiterate this sentiment. I think everyone knows I'm mostly harmless and would never say anything terrible or hurtful to or about any of you.

Except Mayo, because he's fat and everybody hates his face (J/K...I can't stop myself).
