So what cancer did your mother have?

My mother had cancer in her mouth which wasn't the real reason she died. Chemotherapy was what did her in. She managed a week of it, then took a week break from it, did it for another week and her body functions slowly deteriorated.

Just seemed like everything was going to be okay but then /whomp.

My mother had T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia. The doctors pretty much gave her 6-8 months to live from the time of diagnosis. She lived for 13 months. She died 2 days after christmas that year. She only did the chemo and blood transfusions to hang on for that last christmas.

Because of this I always make a point to donate atleast 5000dollars of the interest i earn from the money she left me to cancer treatment facilities in my area. I know it's not amazing but I hope it helps someone somewhere hang on that much longer.

Wow... just fucking wow. My mom was in and out of sleep during the chemo treatments and I remember my immediate family and grandmother just sitting in the room with thanksgiving-ish food (turkey, stuffing, etc) waiting for her to wake up so we could share dinner with her and she woke up while we were just starting, was the most incredible moment I recall, because the medicine they were giving her was supposed to make her a little drowsy so she could rest. Well. we were mid was through starting to eat and she just woke up and was just an incredible feeling to see her still keep trying to smile even when she was just really tired from both drug and physical exhaustion.

We didn't celebrate Christmas till around January. Despite how much we were telling her to just relax and we would have Christmas in her room so she wouldn't have to move much, she, with all her energy took the effort to make it to the chair she usually sits in during Christmas and even though she was so tired, we did Christmas.

Have no idea where this strength comes from other than attributing it to a really strong will to live.

Some people have no fuckin clue what life really is or what is its worth until their's is on the line.

I am so fucking happy that your mom was able to push through another Christmas for everyone close to her.

Anyone else with the a family member cancer story, feel free to post here. I'd love to meet others who else has had a similar story. I will have a new profound level of respect for you if you do.

I lost an Uncle to cancer... I was pretty close to him and it was hard as hell to swallow. The first months were fine but as time went on it became harder and harder for me to see him. I went into a depression and just couldn't take it. I was being selfish and didn't go to visit him the last 3 months he was alive and I regret every minute of it.

He was a great man... father of 5, 1 his and 4 he raised as if they were his own, a volunteer EMT/Fireman and a professional bull rider. Someone so great that suffered through all of that just put me in thoughts of unknown... which I hope to never return too... now that I am older I would hope I would react different and not be selfish to where I regret it later.

Both of you guys seem 10 times stronger than me and have gained a lot of respect for what you guys went through and how you handled it.

:(

I read a story ... let me see if I can find the link (sorry if this is going against forum rules, allow me some ignorance as at the moment I do not know regulations with regards to links, but feel free to edit this is needed and I'll review the regulations/rules first break I get from work) but here it is Liver Transplant.

Read it during my lunch break. Heart wrecking to read.

Also had an uncle who had ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig's as most people know it now. He wasn't my uncle by blood but was probably the one I looked up to the most. It really broke me down to see him go from being a very active person (bike riding, swimming, hiking etc) to barely being able lift a spoon to eat. In his last few weeks I probably spent at least 2 hours a day talking with him about everything you could imagine.

For a long while incidents like this made me afraid to get close to people. Within a 5 year span I lost my closest Uncle, my mother, a really good friend to drugs and finally a fiance that was pregnant to a drunk driver. Luckily I am here though, with my current wife and my 14 month old daughter.

OT: Love the avatar Paddy!
