Did we even have security prior to 9/11? I remember a day where anyone could walk right up to the catwalk thingy at any gate...

When I was young I used to fly by myself to and from NC to NJ while visiting my grandparents. My grandmother would routinely walk to my seat on the plane in Newark and buckle me in and say good bye. Today she would have an air marshal up her ass for giving her grandson a kiss and a hug. The last fight I took before 9/11 was a few years earlier from Birmingham to New Orleans. I forgot I had a small pocket knife on me until I went to pay the drink lady on the plane and we all carried several small sampler bottles of Jack Daniels aboard but quickly drank them during the wait for take off. Image that scene today. Can anyone say full rectal cavity search?

If you can't solve a problem, inconvenience everyone so they think you're doing something about it.

Meanwhile, I'm taking Amtrak everywhere, because even though it's slower and more expensive, I just cbf with this shit.

These scanner things are being put into major, busy, huge airports. Right now DFW airport has them in the international terminals. We're supposed to be getting more but the number is not being disclosed. The security at these kinds of airports is played up a lot more compared to their middle sized or small airports around the country.

I've flown several times since 9/11, but I will admit they were all on this continent. The first time I flew since 9/11 was the very next summer. I remember a metal detector, a bag scanner, and then once I was called to board I was taken aside and they re-scanned all my carry-on baggage-- including my pillow. Down is dangerous, I guess.

The next time I flew was after they added the liquid rule. I flew from the midwest into DFW because my grandmother had died while I was visiting a friend. The security there was just a metal detector and a bag scan. I took a bottle of lotion with me in my bag onto the plane on my way to DFW. Now, when I went BACK to the midwest after the funeral and departed from DFW, the DFW TSA people decided that the lotion I had flown down with was not safe for me to fly back with. I also had to do the shoe nonsense, and since they found lotion in my bag they then decided to unpack ALL of my shit in front of me.

What I'm trying to say is, security is going to vary greatly from airport to airport. If I were a terrorist, it seems to me like I would just leave from some piece of shit airport and connect at a larger airport and just avoid all this expensive scanning equipment entirely. I mean if you're some John Smith flying from Kansas to Chicago to New York, you're not getting stopped and checked anywhere except your departure city (unless you're randomly wanded down as you board a connecting flight). Thinking about that makes the whole concept of all this expensive, controversial scanning equipment pretty fucking useless.

One word, and it's one that will probably piss a lot of people off:

Profiling.

Someone needs to let their balls drop (it'll probably have to be a woman) and tell people, "Fuck you, be offended."

However, just because we would profile, doesn't mean that race/religion/ethnicity would be the only factor(s). There'd have to be some solid criteria to justify a search, like:

Country of Origin
Unsavory Affiliations (ours is not the only gummint what keeps an eye one people, you know? They know who is buying those plane tickets.)
How fares were bought/paid for is a big tip-off, apparently. A short notice ticket paid for in cash is allegedly a "big sign."

They could even have multiple lists, like "must search," and "search if there's cause/time."

Hell, Muslims are not the only group with crazies in their ranks. You could extend that profiling out to catch all sort of crackpots.

Regardless, I don't think this is going to last long, because it will kill air travel when people stop flying because they don't want their nudes on the internet (they've already "forgotten" to delete photos once) or to have some stranger touch their down-stairs mix-up. Someone will be out of a job in a few weeks, the shit will be gone, and they'll be doing something new and different to piss everyone off.

Your Pal,
Jubber

I'm impressed this wasn't shot down in the name of the economy a long time ago.

It it was 2002 i'd understand but it's 2010. Maybe i don't have my ear to the ground as far as les terrorisms are concerned, but i don't feel less safe today than i did 8 years ago.

TSA is and always was a joke.

And yeah, someone will eventually have the explosive shits, but only after they "reprimand" the TSA.

Quote:
A TSA agent was arrested on January 3rd in Terminal One at LAX, a source told NBCLA. He had just gotten off duty and was behaving erratically, saying, "I am god, I’m in charge."

Meanwhile, a TSA Internal Affairs investigation turned up evidence of LAX TSA agents using drugs at an after-hours party.

As I told Fevyn earlier, the only "security" person who groped me was at a club, as I had my arms lifted up and out to the side.

He wound up on the floor, the other bouncers looking at me carefully. I said "if you're not equipped to accept it, don't touch it" and walked into the club.
