So people have been asking my plans for Thanksgiving and when I tell them I am hosting about 50 people at my house for it they look at me like I have three heads. My family are all very close knit and stay in touch/live in nearby counties. Does anyone else have a big family like this? Get the same reactions from people?

My family is enormous. Each year we have a reunion 4th of july party and it's usually around 100 or so people.

Once I move into the new house I will probably be hosting quite a bit at my place. The big family thing really doesn't bother me. Mostly I get those type of comments from people who do not have big familes..so they dont get it.

More people == more helping hands. Things actually go very smoothly and without incident when my whole family gets together

When my grandparents, great aunts/uncles and great-great aunts/uncles were still alive our holiday gatherings used to be HUGE. But now that none of them are alive, there is nothing to really link everyone together as strongly. It's pretty much just my immediate family + my favorite aunt and her daughter's family now. When I was still in a long-term relationship the holidays used to be nuts, since his parents were divorced. I had to go to three thanksgivings and three christmases, and his extended family was massive.

I completely agree. Congrats on the house by the way. I bought mine back in April, it was a nightmare process with all the foreclosures and short sales not to mention the gov't trying to help 'streamline' the process by throwing all types of regulations on the banks :)

We got a really good deal on the house but it needed a lot of work/needs a lot of work.

Our holidays used to be 30-50 people. Now it's like 5-10 of us MAX. Everyone is just doing their own thing it seems.

ITT: People with orthodox Catholic roots.

My grandparents had 13 kids.

All of them have at least one.

Half my cousins have kids. D:

I have a big family but we really don't keep in touch. For the past couple years though I've been making thanksgiving dinner for my closest friends a couple days after the actual day. This year is our biggest at around 15.

The past two years I have been able to go to my grandmas house in Jersey for turkey day. i was reminded of how much fun it was to have 25-35 of my relatives there at once. I am rather pissed about this year because up until about 6 weeks ago I was suppose to be on-call at work and was going to have to miss it, then they changed our starting days for our rotation and I am now on call for the week after. The problem is we usually went up as a family with my mom and brothers to save on gass and everyone cancelled the trip when I coudl not go so we coudl go up for my grandmothers birthday in October instead. Either way I did go up this year but I would rather have been there for lots and LOTS and A WHOLE FUCKING LOT of turkey.

We are going to host for my mom and one of my brothers this year so unless a bunch of the maybes show up it will be 7-9 people tops. This means I will spend most of the day vegging out on football and WoW.

All my extended family is in France. It's decently-sized (like 30 altogether through 3 generations on my dad's side, but only 6 on my mom's side [rich people don't have lots of kids and all my great-aunts got married too late to have kids on that side lol]) because there's so many generations involved, but definitely not on the scale many of you are mentioning.
