Liberals: I would rather not wear that pin, which I believe to be a false substitute for patriotism, and instead guide this country as best I know how and let that be a testimony to one's patriotism. (Paraphrasing)

Conservatives: THAT PIN??? Barack HUSSEIN Obama doesn't want to wear a flag pin, omfg! He hates America!

You guys do the math on this one.

While it may be a "false patriotism" to...well, at least President Obama, when you refuse to embrace your country's innately symbolic emblem, there are going to be a lot of people who think you're symbolically refusing/renouncing your country. The correct thing to do/have done, at least politically, was say thank you for the pin and put it on. No harm, no foul, no letting your messaging get sidetracked by attempting to convey unnecessarily grandiose and (at least mildly) condescending notions to "the plebes."

It is nice after 8 years of Bush to have someone who doesn't make anywhere near the number/type of gaffes (thank you, Mr. Teleprompter), but behavior like that doesn't make any sort of sense. It's like being afraid a dog is going to bite you, then taking a bath in pork chops before you leave the house.

The last administration had just spent every day since 9-11 draping themselves in the flag and trying to claim patriotism in everything they did (including taking away some of our rights).

His choice was to just shut up and go with it, or speak up and go with what he believes (that a stupid pin made in china doesn't make you a patriot). It was the wrong thing politically but the right thing for someone you want to be a leader. Had bush done the same thing for the same reasons I would have agreed that it was also the right thing to do.

You can't lead if no one follows, and the flag-pin thing was turn-off for some. While I understood what he was trying to communicate, a lot of people didn't, and what people don't understand, they misunderstand. "I don't want to be like the last guy and drape myself in the flag" came across as, "let's not be overtly attached to this whole America thing, guys, amirite?" If you don't want to be like the last guy, just don't yell "AMERICA...FUCK YEAH!" in response to every criticism. If you're there to lead, which I would assume means advancing your agenda, you're wasting valuable time and effort putting yourself off-message while giving your political adversaries ammunition that puts you on the defensive when you should be offensive. When you're the President of the United States, there isn't a lot of separation between politics and leadership.

Why does America have to be all into this progressivism? Because you want it to be? Is it so bad that a group of people want to keep the country with their values rather than yours?

Also, I'm curious about your opinion on the Tea Party. Someone who is obviously so far from the Right yet so knowledgeable about the Tea Party has some pretty strange beliefs... like how the Tea Party is pushing some fundamentalist Christian agenda, and how they're denying people personal freedom and social equality. I'm supportive of the Tea Party's message (not some of their figureheads) and I'm not a religious person... so how am I pushing some Christian values? What are Christian values, anyways? Why are they so bad in your opinion? Also, how are the Tea Partiers denying personal freedom and social equality? Arguing for things like lower taxes, smaller government and tax reformation through things like the Fair Tax? Less government is more freedom, you know...

Anyone who would make such a huge leap already had their minds made up about him before this happened anyway. "I don't like that people equate pins with patriotism" to "I don't care about America" is the kind of jump in logic that a moron or a hater would make, and neither are the kind of people you need to pander to.

I can't really say what his feelinga about this is beyond a small snippet, but the way the American people view politics is all fucked up. I clearly understood what he was saying and why he was saying it and he's right. It's a fucking pin. If that's the kind of thing that takes you from "undecided" to "McCain" then just don't vote at all.

Or, if the only thing that takes you from not voting to voting for Obama is the color of his skin, don't vote at all, mirite?

I know you want so very, very badly to believe that a white obama would not have won, but that simply isn't the case.

Edit: You shouldn't vote for/against someone because of the color of their skin.

If you think a Republican would've won after 8 years of Bush, you're high on prozac.

I think a republican could have won, but McCain squandered his 'maverick' cred by following the Rovian tactic of "screw everyone else, pander to the base".

Mayo, McCain almost got 46% of the vote. I think Obama only got 52%? A Republican had a very, very good chance at taking the election.

More blacks voted in this election than ever before. Coincidence? Also, I've met several people in my area that voted for Obama because of stupid shit like White guilt. Hell, I had one guy tell me he did it so he can prove he isn't racist.

And Obama's policies and intentions were crystal clear in the years leading up to his election so I think a White Obama wouldn't have done as well, considering most Americans hate what the man is doing to this country.

I got called racist the other day because I criticized Obama during a class at school. This was further compounded when I told them I voted for McCain and was followed with an argument about how I'm not ethnic enough and should be ashamed.

Obama won because some bad british comedian at the MTV awards told a bunch of stupid kids to do the world a favour.

Voting for obama because he is black is just as bad as voting for mccain because obama is black.

I was criticized for saying that in class. Oh college, where people are so open minded.

They were like "OMG YOURE RACIST!" I said "Of course I am, I love to fuck asians."

Vote obama because he's black.
