Parallel Universe on MSN says these are the top 10 Sci-Fi Movies of All Time. Somehow, I think this is the right audience for this type of discussion. I'm not sure why I think this.

10. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
9. E. T.
8. Aliens
7. The Thing from Another World
6. Terminator 2
5. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
4. Alien
3. The Matrix
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
1. The Blade Runner

Adding viewers list from IMDB:

10. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
9. Aliens
8. A Clockwork Orange
7. WALL-E
6. Alien
5. Terminator 2
4. The Matrix
3. Star Wars: A New Hope
2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
1. Inception

1) Empire Strikes Back
2) Return of the Jedi (I don't give a shit that Ewoks are in it, everything else about that movie is flawless)
3) A New Hope
4) Serenity
5) Children of Men
6) Blade Runner
7) Dune
8) 2001
9) Contact
10) Aliens

I feel I should mention that I absolutely despise Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. I like the Matrix, but not enough for it to make the list. I've also never heard of The Thing From Another World.

Tuhl's list is pretty much 100% accurate, though I'd swap 3 with 6

I totally forgot about Wall-E and Inception. I don't think Inception would ease anyone off my list, but Wall-E might be a strong contender for Aliens's spot.

(I'm a giant nerd and I love Contact)

Inception was a heist movie, wrapped in the trappings of a SciFi

holy shit I forgot District 9. I love that movie. Not sure where I'd put it, but it's definitely displacing something.

I also somehow forgot the Fifth Element, despite it being the finest movie ever made.

I hate Dune.

Lists need more Primer.

Primer is good, but I don't expect anyone to have seen it. And while I enjoyed it, I don't think I can justify having it on my top 10. I'd definitely bump Aliens off and throw in the Fifth Element right ahead of Children of Men though.

Fifth element for certain. I might even pick 12 monkeys too. Jurassic Park? The book sure, movie not so much. butchered like a half rotten cow carcass.
