ITT: North Korea attacks South Korea.

If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.

Last i heard China was financially propping up North Korea. Now this was like 5 years ago and i haven't been paying any attention to Asia since so i don't know. I'd like to think China would be like "Yo Korea, don't mess this up we're doing rly well" but if they're really loyal, then this could get messy.

I hope this doesn't affect the GSL season 3.

I'm hesitant to call it WWIII inc, but yeah, this is definitely not good.

The South’s defence minister Kim Tae-Young said the South had fired 80 shots in response to the North's shelling. “We were carrying out naval, air force and army training exercises and they [the North] seem to have opened fire in objection," a military official added.

Same ol', same ol'. South Korea invents reasons why it's somehow not Kim's fault he's burning their house down.

China and South Korea will both do anything possible to maintain the status quo for fear of what could happen if the situation changed. No matter how powerful China gets or how erratic North Korea behaves, this equation will not change. All parties involved are simply waiting for the North Korea regime to collapse from the inside, even if it takes decades. Their reasoning is fundamentally sound.

This isn't Franz Ferdinand 2.0.

This was a calculated move by North Korea to maintain tensions while they work on passing power to the son. If tensions lowered, individuals in North Korea would be more able to maneuver for power, and outsiders could use the de-escalation to intervene in their internal political situation. The North Koreans' thoughts would turn to the benefits of peace, and that would spell doom for the regime. North Korea knows that lasting peace will be fatal to their regime, so they keep this seesaw of escalation and meaningless negotiation going.

North Korea is like an annoying little brother who's always picking fights.

They sank that South Korean ship, now they are attacking again.

Sigh.

Something seems healthy about this young logic that recognizes these words as really wrong but that intent is more important. This is similar to certain things that couples/families can say to each other that no one else can.

You probably would have tried to whip anyone else who called him gook.

NK is a nice lapdog for the Chinese.

Regardless, my 22 year old cousin just flew to Seoul last week for a year. The week prior was my grandfather's 80th birthday party. I said to my cousin during the party, "You picked a wonderful time to go there."

Her: "Yes, I hear it's quite nice there during this time of year."
Me: "That's not what I was referring to."
Her, looking me in the eyes: "Everyone has to die sometime. If it were to happen, at least I was doing something I loved."
Me: "Much better."
