You have to keep some perspective here. There are tens of thousands of commercial flights in the US every day, and over 10 million per year. How many of those have been flown into skyscrapers? Making up new things to be irrationally terrified of doesn't make your country stronger.

I completely agree with this, but you know the argument is going to be, "well, it only takes one...blah, blah, blah."

It has been my experience that people will eventually get exactly what they deserve.

But if we're not afraid, we can't attack people at random.

Duct-taping plastic sheets to the outside of your house was an action caused by an unreasonable fear. There are still people trying to blow up out planes. I would agree that statistically terrorists aren't that big of a threat, but to do nothing is even more foolish. This is still a legitimate threat, it's not just some paranoid over-reaction. People want to feel safe.

I'm not saying they're doing the right thing now, they could be way more secure while being much less intrusive, but that doesn't mean you just write off security.

I don't feel that we went to iraq at random. I'm sure there was enough of a reason that everyone in power and prominence was on board enough to go through with it.

Whether or not it was a good reason, or worth it, is very debatable.

It's not about writing off security, it's about reacting proportionally to the scale of the threat. There are basic security precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk of an attack, like using the metal detectors and baggage x-rays; pretty much every airport in the world uses these. The problem is with intrusive or unreasonable measures that don't significantly increase safety.
