When I was in college I would do my research early but I wouldn't write a single sentence if it wasn't the night before. The few times I tried to be a good student and work ahead of time I would end up doing poorly, the times I would stay up all night writing I would get much, much better grades. Granted, the biggest papers I would be writing were 15 pages, and it was primarily history or social work.
Not once did I write a paper earlier than the night before, though I was in a similar boat with nothing exceeding 15-20 pages, also primarily History.
I write very fast though, I'm just hugely unproductive until I really need to get it done.
My problem is that if I write something early then I will read it over and over again and get paranoid that it does not make sense, and if I wait til the last minute I will fall asleep in a pile of eraser shavings and drool. The best work I did in the past was work I could turn in early. I would take a Saturday or Sunday and put a sporting event on for background noise and go nuts. If I could turn it in within a day or two and well ahead of the due date I would get excellent grades.
