I'm pretty sure it's a story but it goes something like:

A couple are sitting on the couch watching T.V. The wife is plain looking and not too intelligent. The husband is intelligent but has a device hooked into his head that sends out a loud sound every 30 seconds to interfere with any attempt to form thoughts and ideas, making him effectively as intelligent as his wife.

All members of society have these "handicaps", strong men have weights placed upon their shoulders or arms and intelligent people have these devices put on them. According to the government, this makes everyone equal.

On the TV there is a story about a man, who has gigantic weights and a device on his head because he is both intelligent and strong. He breaks free of his shackles and goes on a chase/shoot-out with the local police. He is ultimately gunned down and killed. The man is wondering about how equal everyone really is when the sound of a horn or something scatters his thoughts and he goes back to watching TV.

Does anyone know what it's called? At nights I usually think as I fall asleep. Last night I kept hearing these loud sounds that would scatter my thoughts. I know it was only in my head but it scared the shit out of me.

A man chooses, a slave obeys.

There was another version but I don't think it even remotely followed the story.

I remember reading it in 10th grade. It was in the book but not part of the curriculum. I read it because I was bored in class. No way that story would ever make the PC cut for a classroom today.

That's how I came to read it. I read alot of stories like that. Never did classwork, it was a waste of time. So I'd read all of the stories in those big thick books. Another one that I recall being prety good was Flowers For Algernon. There was another involving two snipers. idk, there were a couple good ones.

Reading above your grade level was frowned upon in my school but I did it anyways. I read some really nice (I wanna say olde english) King Arthur book, had like gold trimmed pages. Was really good. I remember reading lines from it and thinking how badass it was.

in after rant about reading.

lolwut not sure if srs

Going to assume sarcasm. My school rewarded you for reading at or below your level but not above and they even suggested you not do it.

the two snipers might've been The War of the Rats, which was then butchered into Enemy at the Gates
