I think Bill Maher put it best when he said (paraphrasing) "If the only reason you do good is because you're afraid of God, you know that isn't a good reason and chances are God knows it too".

EDIT:

The same can be said for Christians who kill gay people for the sole reason of where they stick their dick. Condemning Islam as a religion of hate is basically damning all Abrahamic religions for the same reasons.

I was trying to say nothing more than religion doesn't always have to be twisted to be evil.

The Norse used to smash people's chests in with hammers, that's legitimate practice in worshipping Thor, as far as the religion is concerned.

religion has simply existed as a way for people to explain things before they had the tools to adequately explain them

Would I be asking them to prove my point for me? There's religion all over Africa. The North (the bits we ignore less than the rest because they're not black and are capable of exporting something other than war and pirates) is Muslim, for the most part, and sub-Saharan Africa is predominantly Christian.

We can thank ourselves for that one, since we saw it as one of the goals of imperialism to bring true religion to those know-nothings.
