He's also kind of a misogynist....but who can fault him for that.

That would probably be relevant if 1) this weren't a thread attacking a (obviously unreliable) source and if 2) we weren't all in obvious agreement that unhinged dingbats of any stripe don't count as "sources."

Then again, I can see how'd you argue that the guy that said, "I have two dogs. If I had two retarded kids, I'd be a hero...they're pretty much the same thing," is someone you want emulate. Probably not surprising given his close relationship with PETA (he's on their board of directors, I believe).

It's probably not fair to lump Maher in Beck and Olberman, though. He's more of a Bill O'Reilly. Just sane enough to be passable, and only letting the crazy out around the edges when they think no one's looking.

Jubber

Granted that most of the shows are Fox are pretty much a comedy routine, I kind of see where you're coming from.

Regardless:

In regard to the quote: he's a comedian. He's supposed to be funny, and I've heard a hell of a lot worse jokes from politically-based comedians.

Instead of smearing him based on a contextual quote, why not use a valid argument? I'll direct you to Mayo's flowchart.

It's not "contextual" nor "a joke" when you sit there and argue about how right you were to say it for several minutes after saying it.

It's not the only ridiculous thing he's ever said, either. He lost his program on ABC for remarks about how terrorists weren't cowards, but our military members are. He wasn't "joking" then, either, but to be honest, I saw that show when it happened, and I think it was probably more a case of poorly choosing his words and conveying a meaning different than what he intended.

As you say, he is a comedian. He isn't meant to be taken seriously. He proved it with Religulous, which I think was supposed to be taken seriously. He spends two hours doing an actual thoughtful documentary then blows it in the last five minutes by summarizing with "all these crazy fuckers believe in the end of the world and want to bring it about for their rewards," only to go on and say that he also believes in the end of the world, only with Maher the boogey-man isn't the devil, it's everyone who doesn't agree with Bill Maher about the pointlessness of religion.

I think it takes balls to fly a plane into a building.

Unless you're ready and willing to fly a plane into the Dome of the Rock in glorious name of Obamacare, I think you shouldn't call terrorists "cowards".

If all i had to do was fly a plane into a building to get 50 bitches to do my bidding in heaven for eternity, I'd sign up too.

its not bravery if you're thinking with your dick, or think killing yourself in the name of God is your ticket to heaven.

Can we take bravery off the pedestal? I don't like glorifying death if it accomplishes nothing.

There are certain things (probably) worth dying for. Charging another soon-to-be-forgotten bombed out building doesn't qualify.

A-duh, yeah, that's why the last five-ten minutes were such a fucking let-down. Up until that, I was thinking, "Man, it looks like Bill Maher has complete redeemed himself."

Then he completely fuckerized what could have been a defining work that would have raised him from the level of saying things just to be controversial to serious commentator. Like Dagery said, he's a comedian, maybe the movie was a set-up for the last five minutes or so to be a punch-line, and I just didn't get it. Art is like that.
