I think with Blizzard's upcoming "next gen" MMO, and with the announcement that Diablo 3 will have arenas, the pressure is off for them to continue pushing WoW as an e-sport platform. The devs can now shift the focus of WoW back to PvE (where it started in Vanilla) and balance more difficult content with new abilities without feeling like everything needs to be in absolute equilibrium just for the sake of PvP. IMO, it's refreshing, and reminds me of what kept me playing in Vanilla.
Cataclysm, at this point, really does appear to be the best expansion ever, including Vanilla.
It would be even better if it didn't directly follow Wrath.
Three things about the new MMO:
1. It will be more adult, and represent a new franchise, and thus a much more uncertain and "cold market" sell than WoW was - and it may not prove to be as huge a hit. Remember, WoW's success was actually an accident. It was not expected to be orders of magnitude greater than EQ.
2. It will be a MMO FPS, which means that it will be apples and oranges against WoW, meaning that WoW may persist and will likely continue to be supported well into Titan's lifespan, as players who like one may not like the other
3. The fact it will be an MMO FPS means it will be more e-sport friendly.
