From a movie about Lenny Bruce (if you don't know who he is, you should find out):

"It's the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness..."

Given that there are those on FUBU who get extremely mad/offended when someone uses nigger in an off-hand manner, I figured it's appropriate that we talk about it, and words like it.

I would never call a black person the n word because I'm not racist, and it would be offensive if said in a derogatory manner. However, does that mean I can simply never utter the word, even if it is in a joking manner?

Listen to any popular rap song, chances are you'll hear the word "nigga" said many, many times. The word has changed in black culture to know be something of a positive thing "my niggas" = "my friends". They essentially "took back" the word and changed its usage by using it over and over in a new context.

Consider now, how some people on FUBU use it. Are they using it against a specific person? Are they saying, "this black guy is a NI---you-know-what?"

If they aren't, then should it be a problem? Can we simply never use the word because it was used in such an awful manner so many years ago? Don't you think letting this thing be such a TABOO gives the word more power? If black people could take back the word and use it every day...shouldn't all races be able to...and then it would lose all its venom...all its power?

Ever see the movie Blazing Saddles? The Mel Brooks' comedy film uses the word a TON. And the whole point? That people who use the word in a derogatory, mean sense are stupid, ignorant, small-town, hick, MORONS:

TLDR: It's just a word. If you aren't using it to specifically insult someone based on race, then should people still freak out about it?

Pretty sure we already voted on this as a community. We had filters when this board was started. People thew a fit, we took a vote, filters were gone.

Intent is everything.

there's your thread you were looking for, azelma.

I'll disregard the unintentional double entendre that Dooj may get.

No, that word was given power by the hatred that fueled a time in history where some thought they were better than all others.

My stance on it is this: Use it at your own risk. You cannot anticipate everyone's reaction to that word because it still has the power of hate behind it, and that in turn triggers fear. Yes, there are some that don't find it offensive, but how many can say it's without a condition?

Whomever thought up the current idea of using that word to lessen the power of it was an idiot. It just stirs up more debate concerning the topic while a bunch of people scramble to be the cool kid or the klu klux kid using it. It's pointless either way. It was safer as a word of hate, because then anyone who loves their neighbor would decry the usage, as there would only be one way to use it, with hate and fear.

It's not "cool" to use it. You're just feeding a debate that's thoroughly enjoyed by people who use it and then say "but they say it too!" to deflect anger, or mask their own hatred.

Why overcomplicate it? Change is good, in some cases. Not this one. If you'll pardon the double entendre, it's a lot simpler to call a spade a spade. If it was a "suppressed" word, you could easily identify who you should avoid in life when you heard it.

You just fell into the trap of believing that it was for acceptance because that's how it was sold.

I don't use the word because regardless of the context you use it in, you still sound ignorant.

We are not black; argument fails.

I really think at this point there's a general consensus it should be anathema.

Sweet Jesus, I was watching that on AMC with my brother one weekend, and they (of course) cut out all the racial epithets and such. So in that version, the old lady only says, "Up Yours," which immediately makes it funnier since we both knew what she had actually said, so we starting laughing our asses off. My 3 year-old (at the time) nephew, see that adults think "up yours" if funny, says it...which does make it funnier even though you have to stifle that shit and say, "knock that off, you don't do that!"

My brother looks and me and says, "Thank God they censored that shit, I don't know how I'd be able to explain that to Jerry."

Jerry is our token black friend.

Jubber
