I think the question Henq is getting at (and is a valid one) is not why shouldn't you say it, but why would you be inclined to say it?

What circumstance calls for saying it?

Even if you feel like there's no reason not to say it, that doesn't mean there's a reason TO say it. I can use the word rhubarb freely, yet it rarely comes up in conversation.

I think if you're saying some words, you're going out of your way to say it. And in this case, probably to be provocative.

Or, it could just be that since we've all been taught (directly or otherwise) that "nigger" is one of the worst things we can say, we use it when we either really want to offend, or when we're so pissed off only terrible things come to mind.

Would it make more sense to call someone a jerk? Sure. But when you're raging, you're way past giving a shit.

Well, it's not like I run around calling everyone and their mother a Nigger. Anyways, here are the reasons I say Nigger... and its deviations...

1) I say Nigguh (because I'm gangsta' like that) to my Black, Hispanic and Iranian friends. Why? Because it's how we work. We use it like, "What's up my Nigguh" or "You's my nigguh".

2) I say Nigga to just about anyone outside of work when someone is joking around. "Nigga, please" is normally the phrase I use. Why? I heard it somewhere and I thought it was funny. (Imagine that, I find the word funny!?)

3) I think someone else said it in this thread or maybe another, but I believe Nigger isn't generic to all black people but rather to a select group of social degenerates who are a complete drag on everything around them. You know the kind of person I'm talking about, too. Nigger, to me, isn't a blanket statement but it's more of a mentality or personality type, I guess. Kinda like 'White Trash'... not all white people are 'White Trash', but there are some people and we know they exist so pussy-footing around that (and who/what they are) isn't productive.

4) I will say any of the words freely in discussion because, as long as I'm not explicitly meaning to offend anyone with the context, I don't see the words as offensive in the USA in 2010. Like in this thread I have no problem dropping the word because it's not going to offend sensible people. If it does, too bad.

How can I rationalize this?

1) I hate political correctness.

2) I control how I react to something that offends me and others can control themselves, too. It's none of my concern if you're going to be offended by a word and act irrationally, violently or stupidly afterwards.

3) I just don't give a fuck. Like everything else, the more people are exposed to the word the sooner they become desensitized to it. Just doing my part, and all.

I guess, but in the realm of terrible things that come to my mind, I can think of a lot more fun and colorful language to use.

To me, nigger is kind of a bland insult. I mean, it can be a powerfully offensive word, but it really lacks style or creativity.

Well that was obvious.

Dear Diary,
I don't know why I am continually surprised by complete ignorance.

Ignorance? It's not my job to ensure your fragile, glass-like feelings aren't crushed by a silly six-letter word.

PS: I wiped my butt with the pages of your diary... and now you got poop on your hands.

Edit: I used butt and poop so no one would get offended.

Just trying to help babe.
Sometimes, as in this case, helping is a lost cause.
And that's ok too.
Makes the sensible people look better. ;)

But come on seriously...no reason to bring poor hygiene into the mix.

Disagree 100%

By definition social pressure consists of others taking offense at what you do.

Arguing semantics is boring.
Yes that would be one way to "free yourself of social pressure".
Another might be to vote...in contrast maybe it would be "freeing" to not vote.
Another might be to:
-Wear mismatched shoes
-Eat organic instead of fast food
-Drive a prius (or a hummer)

There are thousands of ways to "free yourself of social pressure" and countless ways to be LESS offensive.

Let's not derail the subject though. Happy to continue this conversation in another thread or via real id sometime if you like, Aestu

I don't believe I'm derailing the topic and I'm not intending to be obstinate.

You asked, why do people use the N-word online? This is my answer, escapism.

So then you ask, why not do escapism in some other manner? Well, for one thing, all the examples you give are in real life and most people have a susceptibility social pressure even if it doesn't result in them getting handcuffed or beaten to a pulp or stoned to death. Some of the examples you gave are expensive and others have some sort of "cost" attached, such as being made to wait in line longer because you happen to look like a weirdo.

The online world is somewhat schizoid in this respect because it is possible to freely offend people and get a rise out of freedom from social constraints without the negative reinforcement of face-to-face ridicule.

So, following up your line of questioning - why not be offensive, online, in some other manner, using some other form of profanity? Well, profanity is as profanity does, and your implied suggestion, to use a less offensive term, would defeat the entire point. Obviously people looking to gratify themselves are going to do it in the most effective manner possible and the very fact this thread even exists proves the point.

So you might ask, well, why go about it in a racist way? Well, the truth is, Americans are very racist, that's their culture, and the civil rights movement in the 60s didn't resolve the issue or change the culture so much as cause mass cognitive dissonance. And that's where the online world comes into play, relieving that.

I think the mores of the online world, being generally free from political movements and with a much smaller colored population, have come to reflect the mores of those who inhabit it.

You opened a line of questioning and this is my response to it. I'm not intending to be harsh or pedantic, merely laying out my view on the issue you raised, because I think it's worth meditating on.

So the next question, I think, is: to what extent do you think FUBU and the online world in general should adopt the mores and PC of the real world?

driving at the moment so please excuse the poor english.
you say that in the game you can be free of the face to face ridicule when you use language like that. which is true but since this is a very social game wouldn't there also beat in game ridicule. it seems there would always be consequences to saying that even know this is the game.

4 example the guild intolerance.
many of their members chose to use language like that in public in and in trade chat.
because of this their members where excommunicated and barred from any public raids. although that may not seem like a harsh consequence to some there are many people who take this game very seriously and would see that is a harsh punishment. in fact several of their members and I had a personal talk in vent and in chat about this.

so I guess I don't completely agree that using a typo language has no consequence in game because it's an alternate reality or online world.

This would be a case of the mores of the game reflecting that of its constituency. Real life has its own mores which reflect the realities of real life.

You probably wear a suit to work, or something. Wear that suit to a sporting event and someone will make a point of throwing food at you for the lulz. And the funny thing is, he probably wears a suit to work too. Or something. Then you show up for work in sweats and get gawked at even if everyone in the room would rather be in sweats.

Mores are specific to both people and situations and the mores we choose are those a consensus can be built around. The N-word ceased to be acceptable in real life when the mores permitting it became untenable and were changed.

And so here you are in WoW with different mores which are tenable because this is what people want and I have explained why they want it this way.

You seem to be in the minority with your point of view, that this behavior shouldn't be tolerated. Not saying you're wrong, just, you're in the minority. You can't claim that most players conduct themselves as you choose to. And that is why it is as it is.
