Do black people get paid extra to work on Martin Luther King day?

Seriously though, thoughts on black history month? My only question is where's white male history month? I want a month!

Hourly wage earners should be getting extra post today since mlk is a government holiday.

Regardless of race.

No way is that true...although perhaps it is in a Utopian society.

I actually jacked that quote from a friend of mine who works at AMC theatres. They are definitely not getting paid any extra per hour to work on government holidays (movie theatre employees don't even get paid extra to work on Xmas or Thanksgiving). Private companies have no obligation to pay people more on holidays like this - unless there's some sort of law, which I don't think there is.

Subway has all of its workers listed as managers so they dont have to give them breaks.

My brother works at verizon and he makes double time for holidays.

Fiancee is a teacher and had the day off.

Most of my friends are I the game design industry or software development and they get the day off OR are given PTO hours for use later

I work for NASA and get double PTO time for travel on a holiday.

Maybe this doesn't apply to service industry or entertainment industry jobs...but it certainly does for most of the working country

I work for a printing company, I didn't get a day off or extra pay. I don't know if we've always had to work, or if the holiday was bargained away by the union well before I was hired.

I work for the city government so I am off. My kids are out of school but my wife works for a doctors office and they are open. With the snow here my kids have been out of school for exatly a month and they are driving me crazy. Isn't Black History Month in February? I seem to remember that they combined presidents day with MLK day a while back because there were too many holidays clumped together between November and February. Oh well, time to work my druid to 85.

9 level 90s and 10 85s, Damn I need another hobby.

Yeah, if you have government affiliation, you're definitely off.

Financial markets are also closed.

However, many of us in private businesses don't have off :(

Yeah, here's the thing about a majority of non-government employed Americans. We work a ton. We don't get days off for any ole holiday. Also, we aren't like the Europeans, being lazy and taking afternoon naps and lunches etc.

It's the capitalism/work ethic that's instilled in most people.

Our cushy government workers still enjoy their fantastic benefits and paid days off though...

I don't know about other places but here at least it is a day off now. But it wasn't in the past few years, and before that it was. So i'm not really sure, I think they change their stance a lot.
