If you're as quick with a gun as you claim to be, you'd have been woken up, shot a cop, and today you'd be dead or worse.
What's worse than being killed?
Anyways, as a responsible gun owner I have guidelines I follow.
1) Always treat the weapon as if it was loaded.
2) Don't let the gun point at anything/anyone I'm not willing to kill. (This means I need to identify my target before pointing my weapon. This keeps family members and police raids from getting shot.)
3) Don't touch the trigger until I've sighted the target. (This is another chance to identify the threat of the target.)
You also have to consider the chance of over-penetration and what collateral damage my occur, like if a round were to go through an exterior wall, a neighbors window and then into their head... but that's a chance you have to take when it comes to protecting yourself.
In this situation, I'd think the cops coming in and yelling, "Police" and "Search Warrant" would be a good indication for me to not run out guns-a-blazing.
Your claim was that you sleep with one eye open, so to speak, and you are ready to quick-draw at any suspicious noise. Now, if an "intruder" has the drop on you and you take the time to, in addition to reaching for your weapon, assess his identity, in that time he will shoot you dead. This is especially true given the limits of a waking human's responsiveness and mental reliability.
Any gunfight boils down to who shoots first and that in turn typically boils down to who has the lowest threshold to fire.
Besides that, if you think as you claim, believing that to be mere common sense, then what criminals will do (and this happens already) is yell, "OMFG POLICE GET DOWN" and THEN shoot you dead.
