So, I have my History midterm tomorrow (probably Friday-5-6 inches of snow so far, 10 more over night.) and the teacher gave us the essay question and a note card. The essay question is as followed:

"How has disunity in the nation caused an issue between state rights (i.e. how much power the states get) and national power? Provide three examples of the struggle for power between states and the national government. You may include any information starting from the Articles of Confederation up to the end of the Civil War."

It's a typical five paragraph essay for a high school student. If anyone would like to help me out on this, that'd be great. Just state three strong ideas with a sentence of explanation. I'm lazy :p.

1. Do it yourself.

2. No one gives a shit about high school.

3. No one else is in high school.

I'd offer examples but they're all through the eyes of a courtroom.

Just use Nullification, the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions which were basically attempting to reinforce the notion that any power not expressly given to the Federal Government belonged in the hands of the states, and the Northern states contending that the Fugitive Slave Laws and the Dred Scott decision were attacks on their own rights.

you really can't come up with 5 measly paragraphs after spending a few weeks in the class going over material?

This is just further proof why education in America is a sham and continues to demonstrate why we are falling so far behind the rest of the world.

The sad thing is, these are the toughest things Brykon will likely have to do academically. Once he gets to college, unless he has a crazy major like physics or engineering, no class will challenge him.

On top of that I hear that students in the US pass what is basically an "IQ test" before being admitted to the good schools as if it's an accurate measure of anything.

Education focuses waaaaaaaay too much on rote learning/exams and not enough on experimentation and skeptical analysis.

Ask a skeptical question in class to challenge the prof for a better explanation, watch heads turning towards you with a "hey shut up, we're being indoctrinated here" face.

Ridiculous.

I like asking those questions.

That face means I'm smarter than they are.

No, that's not education's fault. But I'm sure Brykon will pass this class by reading a few wikipedia articles and regurgitating what they say in essay form. He will then get into a decent college, where he won't have to do much more than a few google searches throughout his entire time there. This isn't a bash on Brykon, he's lazy because our entire system is set up to let people who are lazy still be successful. I'm sure if he wanted to, he could do all the research himself, pour over any notes he has taken in the class, and churn out an excellent essay. However, he doesn't have to do that in order to get a decent grade...so he has no incentive to do anything more than post here.

I loved Ohio State, but I'll be the first to admit that I learned way more in a college preparatory high school than I did in actual college. When I took a Biology class it was an utter joke...as I had already learned all of it when I was in 10th grade. I had to take 2 years of Latin in order to get a diploma from my high school (we had to translate Caesar's Gaelic War's by the end of year 2). When I got to college, so many people were there who had done very little in their public high schools, and we all ended up in the same place. I ended up basically snoozing through college because I realized that all the effort I put in in high school really didn't mean much. I now have a great job and work hard at it, but my education did nothing for me.

This is not unique to any one institution, even schools like Harvard and Yale have inflated grades (I mean, Dubya graduated from Yale....).

I just think we have an entire generation of lazy asses who won't do much, but will get decent jobs (or worse, just live off the government).

Don't get me started on the "party" / "drinking" atmosphere of most colleges too...that's just another reason higher education is an absolute joke in this country.

Most of us would prefer working 40 hours a week with some guaranteed vacation time instead of working 60 and never getting a break. Shocking, really.

So fucking true. I hate to admit it, but almost every job I've ever had, every event I ever got into, etc. it was through a connection.
