Currently have a live feed from the English version of Al Jazeera:

http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/?foo=bar

Protesters are setting government buildings on fire, fighting with police, basically trying to oust a government that has been in power for 30 years. Egypt's president who has been in power throughout that entire time has not been seen or heard from since these protests began. Basically the citizens are protesting the growing poverty, rising food prices, sub-standard living, etc.

Egypt's government has shut down all social networking sites in Egypt (facebook/twitter) because protesters were organizing (also, they don't want images of conflict getting out).

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technol ... ernet.html

Thoughts?

Ironically, this is a dicey situation for the US because Egypt is one of only 2 countries in the middle east that has recognized Israel, and is a very strategic ally. Basically, the US has looked the other way on human rights/democracy issues in Egypt for a long while because of their value as an ally. If the government is overthrown, that could have negative ramifications for the US.

Curfew is now in effect:

bad governments deserve to crumble. I hope they can instill a new one that is actually not a horrible p.o.s. to it's citizens.

It's a very mixed bag. Egypt has been probably our best ally in pushing for peace between Palestine and Israel. At the same time, they're one of our go-to countries for outsourcing torture, and obviously the political situation there is not tenable.

Personally, though I'd love to see peace between Palestine and Israel move forward, I don't think Egypt will be a very convincing voice to the Palestinians if the government is in power clearly against the will of it's people... so it's a bit of a sunk cost there.

Theyre americas ally because its an american backed dictatorship. It will probably end up in the positive for egyptian civilians if its not fucked with by the US.

The protestors also earlier formed a human shield around churches which were being bombed by suicde bombers earlier. Now the christians are doing the same when the protestors take a break to pray.

I've been following this for the past couple days, and I will say I'm pleased (though not surprised) by the absence of lethal violence perpetrated by either side. It will be interesting to follow it over the next few days.

Another interesting situation that's well, been developing for several months, is the conflict over the resolution of the election in the Côte d'Ivoire last year. I'm waiting for the summit to start among AU leaders (I believe this weekend); there's been rumblings that governments who originally supported Alassane Ouattara might just say fuck it and back Laurent Gbagbo to keep peace/stablize the region.

Insufficient data to reliably predict short-term outcome. Likely result will be some sort of compromise.

Likely long-term result will be government more likely to put pressure on Israel and force a positive change in the status quo.

Haha Obama just gave the most political speech ever. Basically "we want to work with the government to ensure the voice of the Egyptian people is heard"

Not bashing the Egyptian president that the people want to step down.
Not saying that the Egyptian people are out of line.

lol politics.

Unstoppable force vs immovable object. This is a good one.

Quote of the day.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

he's outliving his usefulness and is being replaced in a method so that the people will support the new puppet.

the people are just unwitting cogs in that machine.
