because... just because...

1. If hard-line Muslims believe that all Muslims who don’t want to kill Christians, Jews and other heathen are no-good, pussy backsliders who aren’t really following the true teachings of the Muslim faith, will they forever undermine peace efforts/agreements with non-Muslim enemies because going along would be tantamount to rejecting Allah?

2. Does desperation or fear of rejection impede more relationships?

3. Should medical researchers be held liable for their published findings if someone is harmed who follows their recommendations? What if the researcher deliberately publishes false results?

4. Is corporal punishment abusive or effective discipline?

5. Will the influx of foreign business, jobs and money into India strengthen or destabilize the country in the long term?

6. Presuppositions: Mankind has discovered an Earth twin with everything currently on our planet except human beings, has produced the technology to reach the twin on self-sustaining transport ships (think the Enterprise) that can comfortably carry 1,000 people each, but has limited storage of 3x3x3 containers for each person for items needed after arrival. Each ship must be independent. The trip will take 200 years but current life spans will not change meaning a few generations will have to be produced. Would you volunteer to be in the initial group? Who should get to go? Do you think anyone would be alive on the ships when they arrived?

7. Are honors bestowed on people in order to inspire others; sort of a “See how we esteem those who do “X”? If someone is motivated to achieve because they want the honors, does this diminish their achievements? Which honors, if any, would you like to gain?

8. Have you ever been in a class where a huge portion of the class missed a specific question on an exam? Discounting poorly written questions, if a professor gives his class (any class size over 25) a short answer examination, what percentage of incorrect answers on a particular question indicates that the professor has done a poor job of instruction?

inb4 slew of 'meaningless questions' from Aestu.

PS: I'll answer them later... probably... maybe.

Yep.

Desperation. Trust me on this....

Not in the first case...as there can always be error in research. If the deliberately publish false results, though....yeah they definitely should be held liable.

For what, children? I think it all depends on the situation/severity of the punishment. I was spanked as a child, but not abused. I turned out fine. When I have children, I will most likely spank them. However, corporal punishment should be a last resort, and it should be clear before, and after, why it was done. If you give the kid a timeout, if you tell them to stop...warn them that corporal punishment is imminent, and they still continue to act out, then yes...corporal punishment is appropriate. Always explain afterward "you were spanked because of X. Don't do X and you won't be spanked"

Other forms of punishment -- using objects, hot sauce, cold showers...that stuff is abusive in my opinion. A good ole-fashioned smack on the behind for a child that is acting like a little shit, though, is effective.

Strengthen. Currently my business employees many people in India, and helps raise their standard of living.

Fuck that. How are people going to reproduce while traveling in 3x3x3 containers? We need to wait until technology catches up and we can arrive in a time shorter than someone's lifespan, or we learn how to extend lifespans so that it only takes 1 generation to make it there and start populating.

I have no desire for honors other than personal one's. Honor's can serve to motivate sure, and I don't think it diminishes anyone's achievement if they did it solely for the honor.

This highlights another problem I have with education. In college, many classes I was in had to have curves because everyone was failing the exams. If the average grade is failing, I think that falls on the professor. Either you aren't teaching the material well enough, or you are designing exams poorly so that students are studying the wrong information.

My senior year I had an economics class. I took notes, attended every lecture (I may have skipped 1), went to the reviews, and when it came time for the final, I studied my ass off. When I took the final, there were questions I had never encountered before. Ideas that I simply hadn't seen. I failed. So did a majority of the class. The professor had to bump everyone's grade up at the end because so many people would have failed the class.

To me, that's a poorly designed test...or a failure to point students in the right direction on what they should be studying. I don't ask for the answers, but please tell me "I may ask you about this. Review this concept. This equation might show up on the exam." I'll learn it, and spit it back to you...but if you apply concept in ways I have never encountered before, and give me equations that are like nothing I have ever encountered...how can you expect me to be successful?

Make things challenging...but not so much so that everyone just fails...that's retarded and how can anyone learn anything that way.

1. Unfortunately, yes.

2. Both. Too many desperate women jumping into relationships with men who are afraid of getting old and being that creepy guy hitting on 19 year olds.

3. They should absolutely be held responsible for false or innacurate findings because they are praised for a lifetime if their findings are correct.

4. Effective. Look at countries that do not have the backlogged loophole riddled justice system that we do. You kill a man, you hang in a matter of weeks, then the people who knew you got punished dont kill anyone because they have seen first hand what happens.

5. The influx of foreign ideas and culture into India will eventually weaken the country. India has long been a country of certian values, most of which are quite good, and destablizing these values will turn it into a very tan America.

6. Azelma missed the point of the 3*3*3, that is for your belongings, not you. For one I would volunteer if I were able to go with my wife and kids. For the first generation be sure to make a second, those who go should be already in a relationship. Space Dating Game or E-Harmony long distance would not be a good idea, take people who are already in relationships to ensure that at least the first generation reproduces.

7. The award should not be the motivation, it is a byproduct. Most if not all Nobel Peace Prize winners have no idea that they even are getting an award and most dont even want the attention. If you do something for an award you are doing it for the wrong reason.

8. I have had the test question wrong incident a few times. Most noteable in advanced chemistry during my junior year. We had a lab test that was about 25% of our final grade. well over 90% of the class got the question wrong. My lab partner and I along with another group found the error and turned in the books correct answer and the real correct answer with a note to the teacher as to what we found. Once the test were handed in we brought it to his attention but he still graded according to the book, which meant no one got a perfect grade. The other groups parents complained because they would have had a 100 (we missed another question and would have had a 90 or so with the fixed answer). The teacher regraded and said he would give extra credit to those who could figure out what the real answer should have been but it was only like two points so it did not change anyones actual letter grade.

9 level 90s and 10 85s, Damn I need another hobby.

Do the Westboro Church or other Christian extremists do the same for our talks with non-christian countries?

Desperation. Jesus Christ, desperation.

Yes, they should, as they should've tested more thoroughly. Also, the scientific community is pretty good at self-regulating false results.

No. Violence only begets violence.

Quote:

If we do nothing about it, it will destabilize the country. If we start punishing businesses that are exporting jobs and take other precautionary measures, it won't be a problem.

I don't think I would volunteer because of all the beauty our planet currently has. People should volunteer to go since it won't matter, because I think everyone would be dead or massively fucked up on the point of arrival (think Fallout vaults).

I don't think people are motivated for the honors, they just want to be the best and the honors are fluff. If anything, I'd love to get some Michelin Stars on my name.

I am not sure this is worded correctly. Or maybe I am reading it wrong.
Those two things, desperation and fear of rejection seem to be the cause of a relationship not starting at all, rather than a relationship that is "already on the tracks" "derailing".
IF you meant, "which one is the cause of more relationships being missed, or not started at all.....
Fear of Rejection. I say that since it applies to just about every single person I know.

I think that Islam is similar to Christianity as in it has a majority of peaceful believers, and a loud minority of fundamentalists that we notice, some of which have power.

Medical findings should always be tested with something like double-blind placebo controlled studies before being put in practice. However shit happens in medicine, surgeons and physicians do make mistakes that lead to health problems and deaths and it would be unfair to punish every one of them. Each of them is extensively investigated. It would be counter-productive to fire anyone for any mistakes, as you have to replace them with new people who will also make mistakes. "An expert is someone who has made every mistake in his field".

The point of publishing research is for other researchers to review and replicate the experiment or study and correct the mistakes that the original researcher may have made. There's been some fraudulent ones, like the vaccine-autism connection one.

Rule of thumb: assume stupid mistake and investigate for malice.

Yes, but we would probably have to wait until we discover a more efficient way of traveling. Traveling at near the speed of light brings in time dilation problems. At current speeds it would take about 10,000 years to reach the nearest star.

It's good that they get recognized for their findings, but it's bad that people are being judged based on the number of honors they've gained instead of the person's findings, intellect and personality. People like Einstein and Feynman (whom I admire) are seen by some people as infallible demigods, but they were just like most other human scientist - driven by curiosity and feeling stupid all the way to the time they figure out their big discovery. Not to mention that it's teamwork, Einstein didn't build and refine his theory of relativity alone.

If you're motivated only by honours you won't get far academically.

You have to see honours for what they are and nothing more.

People fail those because they know the words/definitions/equations but don't understand it and are unable to visualize what was thought. The professor introduces them to the subject and does his best to explain it in a way that most can understand it, but actually understanding is the student's responsibility. Mentioning that you don't understand is usually a good thing.

Bad professor that just recites facts and equations/definitions means that you need to compensate by yourself.

1. I think all extremists regardless of faith/affiliation will continue to undermine peace efforts. Muslim extremists certainly will, as will Jewish extremists in Israel who find the idea of peace with anyone (they tolerate us because we bury them in money) abhorrent, as will Christian extremists (mostly people who aren't Catholics), as will political extremists, etc. Michael Caine said it best in Dark Knight.

2. Hmm. I'd say desperation because if it's derailing the relationship, fear of rejection's played its course and you're already dating/married.

3. Medical researchers aren't liable for published findings directly because those don't count as "recommendations" and even if they did count in the legal sense, people have other options open and can exercise the right to ask for alternatives. False results are a different story, but again it's more a question of censure/mockery/expulsion within the discipline rather than liability for harm, since medical researchers that discover anything of value (or fake something to make it look valuable) don't end up affecting the general public until 3-5 years down the road, optimistically.

4. We talking shit like belts and canes? That's abusive. Getting spanked because you threw your brother down the stairs or something, though, that's fine. Not because it's necessarily constructive, but because that kind of thing doesn't cause trauma. I wouldn't raise kids that way, but I don't consider it bad parenting.

5. Depends on how they play their cards, but if they go the ultracapitalist route, the huge gap they've got between rich and poor won't get any prettier.

6. Depends who's coming with me. From the sound of this hypothetical, I don't have to do any actual colonizing, so if the ships are cushy enough it sounds like a good deal to me. If I've got a snapshot of the internet as-is right before departure, as well as updates to wikipedia and reddit while it's still feasible (assuming we're not going faster than light, which would kind of destroy that possibility), it could make for a good time. Wait just kidding I just noticed that 3x3x3 container thing, how is that at all adequate for colonization/won't it cause problems for when the first shipborn generation decides they don't like daddy's stuff or there are too many kids and too few trunks of things? Maybe I'm not reading this right.

7. Honors are mostly a way for a particular government to do the equivalent of facebook-liking something someone posted as their status. That said, I wouldn't mind the Légion d'Honneur.

8. Yes, yes I have. Sometimes it's accidental, like a class where he used an old exam and forgot to go over a certain thing and subsequently strike the question after he notices everyone's missed it. Sometimes it's a hardass who's giving a question out of the book which no one's read. Sometimes it's an analytical question and the professor has overestimated the reasoning capabilities of his students.

I like these threads, but i feel like with so many questions its hard to discuss any one in detail, and plenty of them are worthy of their own threads.

Tuhl, Mayo and Joklem all opened their answers with basically, “Well, other groups are just as bad”. I find it interesting that we tend to bring up comparisons when discussing these things rather than look at the specific point being made. If the answer to this question is “yes” which I think it is, does pointing out that there are extremists in other religions/groups make the actions of these guys more excusable? Is it somehow racist to discuss the actions of a specific group (and hold them accountable) simply because others might do the same? If so, why? I’m not going to dig it up, but I remember some discussions here about Westboro in which those nutjobs were highly criticized for their actions. iirc, no one brought up in that discussion that Muslims have zealous whackos, as well.

Henq is right about the wording, and even though I changed it, the more I thought about this, the more I leaned toward fear of rejection because this stops innumerable relationships from even getting to the desperation stage.

Certainly, this has to be “no”, to the first question. The second question should be yes with penalties that exceed derision, censure, etc. Anything that serves as a deterrent to research is a bad thing. Ideally, peers should keep each other in line, but Maz pointed out to me that peer review is getting tougher all the time because there is just so much research out there that a lot of it simply won’t get reviewed/tested. I guess with fierce competition for research funding, finding money to spend on researching research could be rough. Maybe this is why it took 10 years to discover that the vaccination/autism research was bullshit.

Spanking or paddling a kid is absolutely effective discipline. I, and most of your parents, and certainly your grandparents lived at a time when getting a “whoopin’” was nothing at all out of the ordinary. They turned out fine. Kids who are loved, but disciplined by spanking/paddling, don’t grow up hating their parents any more/less than kids who get loltimeout.

India is a country with an enormous poor population that depends on religion and a caste system for order. Introducing foreign business concerned only with the bottom line that has no concept or sensitivity to the Indian culture is definitely a threat to stability there, imo.

With the presupposition of we have a place to go, we have the means to get there, we can’t carry too much with us, and it will take 200 years, it is a difficult proposal. Even with a highly skilled initial group, maintaining education and skills so that the final generations to arrive would be capable of survival would be problematic, as would maintaining social order on the ships. I think survival could be possible, but I don’t think I would want to be on the initial voyage.

Rereading this, I think this implies a negative opinion of honors, which I didn’t really mean to do. Honors are fine when sincerely offered and earned. I think some honors have been cheapened over time such as knighthood. The true measure of an honor is not so much the list of those who have received it, but of those who might have but were rejected.

If an instructor tests a class with a properly written question, and more than 50% answer the question incorrectly, then the problem lies most often with the instructor.

Leading and loaded question.

If Crusaders believe that all Christians who don't want to kill Muslims, Jews and other heathen are no-good pussy backsliders who aren’t really following the true teachings of the Christian faith, will they forever undermine peace efforts/agreements with non-Christian enemies because going along would be tantamount to rejecting God?

If Communists believe that all workers who don't want to kill anyone who isn't a Commie are no-good pussy backsliders who aren’t really following the true teachings of the Marxist faith, will they forever undermine peace efforts/agreements with non-Marxist enemies because going along would be tantamount to rejecting Marx?

If Germans believe that all Germans who don't want to kill Gypsies, Jews and other heathen are no-good pussy backsliders who aren’t really following the true teachings of the Fuhrer, will they forever undermine peace efforts/agreements with non-Aryan enemies because going along would be tantamount to rejecting the Fatherland?

Bigotry is the only possible motive for such a specious way of thinking.

Depends on the scenario. For children of a certain age it is effective, in extreme moderation and in appropriate settings. If you're trying to motivate coal miners or other brute laborers, definitely. More often though, it's self-defeating, because it engenders cynicism and fatalism.

Destabilize.

I wouldn't care one way or the other because it would make no difference. Humans will bring their strengths and weaknesses with them wherever they go.

Who should get to go? Makes no difference. The great will be great and the petty will be petty wherever they go, and be of service to their communities no matter when or where they are.

The third part of your question is meaningless because the answer, as Mr Joklem so kindly points out, is already known to us: they would never leave Earth nor even be constructed because any efforts would descend into petty bickering about the here and now.

"Man has killed man since the beginning of time, and each new frontier has brought new places and ways in which to die. Why should the future be any different?"

7. Are honors bestowed on people in order to inspire others; sort of a “See how we esteem those who do “X”? If someone is motivated to achieve because they want the honors, does this diminish their achievements? Which honors, if any, would you like to gain?

Rarely. More often, honors are bestowed either due to political expediency or to aggrandize the bestower by association.

And then you meet people who have absolutely no substance except that they've been awarded honors...in honor of other honors conferred on them...their entire persona is just a yarn-ball of rewards based on social prestige.

Ultimately, there's nothing there; they are just an empty suit.

8. Have you ever been in a class where a huge portion of the class missed a specific question on an exam? Discounting poorly written questions, if a professor gives his class (any class size over 25) a short answer examination, what percentage of incorrect answers on a particular question indicates that the professor has done a poor job of instruction?

Yes, and this question is meaningless because no number can prove the professor hasn't done all he can. I would make the opposite argument and say that 100% A+s is more likely to prove he's doing a bad job: the content is too watered down.

"That's the sound of war. I know it. Not enough that war comes to my world, that it tears through my hometown. Now it comes here, to the most sacred place of all, where only peace should be! I was right, you see? War consums everything and everyone. There is only war."
