I loathe Chiacgo. I don't mind visiting LA, but I'd hate to live there. Vegas is the greatest US city... followed by DC, sup?

I'll be in San Francisco next week on business! I told my travel partner to pack the Iodide tablets. ;)

Why do you loathe Chicago?

Also, things to hate about New York:

1. Cost of living
2. New Yorkers

I like the Bulls so I'll let them slide.

Chicago is kind of a cool place but I think I ran into every douchebag while I was there.

I'll agree with all those but Sox fans...Sox fans are pretty knowledgeable, good baseball fans. Also, the Bulls are sweet. Derrick Rose will haunt you.

As for meeting douchebags, I've been her well over a year and haven't had any douchebag experiences outside the normal standard deviation of human behavior. Also, I don't really go to douchebag bars or douchey things...so maybe that's part of it. On the other hand, whenever I've been in NYC, I've found that I'm absolutely swimming in douchebaggery. The Upper West Side...I mean...it's straight out of American Psycho the douchey-ness and consumer-ness of it all.

I think it all comes down to perception and experience though. All cities have their good and bad parts, and it's just what you're exposed to that forms your opinion.

I remember I got off the train from Philly in NYC once. I walk out of the station...and the first thing I see is a cabby and this guy exchanging "fuck you's" and just getting in each other's face. I remember thinking to myself "yep, I'm in New York."

In any case, it's all about experience - so we will all have our preferences for cities.

That being said, LA is still a shit hole and the tumor of Western society.

Not San Fran, no, apparently not. I didn't know, I would've said San Fran, but you'd go, "We don't like San Fran. Fuck it." Or what's the other one? Frisco, you don't like that, either.

You judged the entire city based on your experience on the upper west side?

No wonder why you perceive "douchey-ness" and "consumer-ness". My condolences for your limited experience in 5% of the city.

Well, I've also experienced the ironic pretentiousness that is the hipster capital of the world (Brooklyn).

No, you went to Williamsburg, which would only be on your itinerary if you were foolish enough to think that going to the hipster capital would be "cool".

Did you go to say, the lower east side? The meatpacking district? Chelsea? SoHo? Avenue A?

I'd venture the village, but your luck would make you wind up in a fratbar with the NYU privileged class.

Have been to Chelsea and SoHo. I was fortunate to check out Google's Chelsea offices (business trip during my college internship)...those were sweet, I will admit.

Again, I think part of it does come down to luck - the fact that I've met the kings and queens of douches in NYC has given me a negative impression overall.

There's just that NYC arrogance, the "yes, we are better than you, we are the most important city in the world" that is very pervasive with MANY residents, and something that I don't notice in other cities. There's a difference between hometown pride and outright arrogance. Ask people who live there, or want to live there...you can hear it. It's like that song "New York" by Jay-Z, it's all about how their city is better than every other. Having grown up in Philly (age 3-15), I'll also admit a bias. If you are from Philly, the people from New York are the worst.

I like to cite my older step-sister. She graduated from Ohio State and then moved to NYC to attend Fordham Law. As soon as she started living in NYC, everything else became shit. She would say things like "oh this shirt is so New York" or "well in New York we do this...blah blah" Ohio became just a po-dunk state with a bunch of moronish hicks (queue someone quoting that lol). Now my younger sister wants to move to New York. It's all she talks about...how "amazing" it is, how much "better" it is.

I guess that "attitude" is part of what turns me off about NYC. There is an energy to it...a life that is very different. It's just not for me. Too congested, too rude, too arrogant, too typically "New York"

The song's called "Empire State of Mind", which indicates 1) Empire 2) State of Mind.

Quote:
In New York,
Concrete jungle where dreams are made of,
Theres nothing you can’t do,
Now you’re in New York,
These streets will make you feel brand new,
The lights will inspire you,
Lets here it for New York, New York, New York
Welcome to the bright light..

It's commonly thought that in NY, you can find anything you need or want. Unfortunately, since you have so much available in one location, you tend to find many people who, like you, wind up being xenophobic on a local level.

I've traveled to a variety of places, and I usually receive the "you're not from new york city" treatment.

Also, fuck Jay-Z.

Obviously you don't have the OMG NYC IS THE BEST arrogant way of carrying yourself.

This is a good thing.

Unfortunately, other New Yorkers don't conduct themselves in the same way, which is why many people around the country, myself include, equate words like "douche" and "jerk" ("Yo! Can't ya see I'm WALKIN HERE!?") with "New Yorker"

DC is the most important city in the world... not NYC.

Yes, but you're equating your experience with how your friend changed to how the whole of the city is. It's not like that, though, and your companion would've turned into a douche regardless of what city they went to. I have an ex-friend from High School who moved off to France, and the 2 times I saw him when he visited, I'm pretty sure hipsters were modeled after him.

Yes, people can be rude. You have a shitton of people all trying to live their lives and people swarming in from all around the world to fulfill whatever dream or desire in the city. There's going to be conflict.

But, just because New Yorkers don't seem to have the time or the courtesy for simple pleasantries doesn't mean that they're rotten to the core. For every time you were cut off or given the single finger salute, there were other tourists or residents who experienced something different. Every now and then there's a pleasant little story about some tourist who gets completely screwed over and the city and its residents prove they're human after all.

But that doesn't fit the stereotype, so our pleasant heartwarming stories remain a mark of local pride. Yes, we can be assholes. But we can also step up and do what's right. We just won't discuss the weather while doing so. It's called a "New York Minute" for a reason.

Once upon a time, DC was a swamp, filled with decaying matter trapped in stagnant water.
