Well, I've also experienced the ironic pretentiousness that is the hipster capital of the world (Brooklyn).
No, you went to Williamsburg, which would only be on your itinerary if you were foolish enough to think that going to the hipster capital would be "cool".
Did you go to say, the lower east side? The meatpacking district? Chelsea? SoHo? Avenue A?
I'd venture the village, but your luck would make you wind up in a fratbar with the NYU privileged class.
Have been to Chelsea and SoHo. I was fortunate to check out Google's Chelsea offices (business trip during my college internship)...those were sweet, I will admit.
Again, I think part of it does come down to luck - the fact that I've met the kings and queens of douches in NYC has given me a negative impression overall.
There's just that NYC arrogance, the "yes, we are better than you, we are the most important city in the world" that is very pervasive with MANY residents, and something that I don't notice in other cities. There's a difference between hometown pride and outright arrogance. Ask people who live there, or want to live there...you can hear it. It's like that song "New York" by Jay-Z, it's all about how their city is better than every other. Having grown up in Philly (age 3-15), I'll also admit a bias. If you are from Philly, the people from New York are the worst.
I like to cite my older step-sister. She graduated from Ohio State and then moved to NYC to attend Fordham Law. As soon as she started living in NYC, everything else became shit. She would say things like "oh this shirt is so New York" or "well in New York we do this...blah blah" Ohio became just a po-dunk state with a bunch of moronish hicks (queue someone quoting that lol). Now my younger sister wants to move to New York. It's all she talks about...how "amazing" it is, how much "better" it is.
I guess that "attitude" is part of what turns me off about NYC. There is an energy to it...a life that is very different. It's just not for me. Too congested, too rude, too arrogant, too typically "New York"
