I think there is a huge difference between consensual sex between a 16 year old and a 26 year old, and someone having sex with a 10 year old. I never liked the idea of them being prosecuted the same way. Would I advocate for legalizing it? I don't think so. There's a whole array of problems I can forsee stemming from that. But I don't think someone having consensual sex with a teenager should considered the same by law as someone who fondles 7 year olds.
There's an increase in the number of 18 year olds on the sex offender list (for life, you don't come off those lists) for sleeping with their 16/17 year old boy/girlfriend. This is completely the wrong way to handle the situation, and some states do have laws that allow some leeway in these cases.
There are also now 16/17 year olds being placed on the list for sexting, when they are the ones taking pictures of themselves. I don't support sexting (it's just a bad idea for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with morals), but you can't punish these kids by labeling them a sex offender for life because of it.
