I was thinking about your discussion about Eturnal calling out those who wouldn't serve and Mayo mocking him for not actually staying in the army or holding a desk job or whatever after I saw this:

Image

POG: Personnel Other than Grunts

Fobbit: A term used to describe soldiers in Iraq that rarely if ever leave the relative safety of the Forward Operating Base (FOB). This is a perjoritive term used by soldiers that spend a lot of time outside the wire beaing shot at and dodging road-side bombs, for those soldiers that live a safer and more comfortable life.

I guess anyone who isn't literally out in the field getting shot it is considered to be a bitch. There's no hope for me if I ever get drafted :(

In two years and some change (J.D and bar exam), even if I sign up, I'm incapable of ever being in harm's way. Because lawyers are automatically captains in the JAG.

might be worth it just to outrank Eturnal.

Can I choose to be a sniper if I ever get drafted?

not that you'll ever get drafted.

nor will you ever make it as a sniper. I know a guy who was force recon, and he was describing one of his training exercises. He said one time, I had been sitting in a waist deep hole, knee deep in water, staring through some trees, doing breathing exercises to keep my heart rate and body temperature within a certain range(I forget the term for it) and i was there for three days, waiting on a target to arrive. The best part about this exercise was that I'd had chiggers on my balls.

A marksman is one thing, a recon/sniper is completely different.

Um, just to correct my mention in the OP - I wasn't calling out anyone who wouldn't serve as pussies... I was just saying that the populace (in general) is becoming pussified. We're too worried about hurting other people or their feelings. We're too worried about making friends with our enemies rather than defeating them. I think the military could teach a lot of people how to become stronger, have greater respect, order and responsibility... or, in short, to make them not be pussies.

How was it too much for me? I went to my CO to try and get what was written in my contract (tuition payment). He contacted my Congresswoman and the JAG since the State denied the request. Since contractual discrepancies are more of a legal matter the inquiry went that way. I'm guessing the Adj. Gen. just got sick of the inquiry because I received my discharge papers without any real discussion. Once I received my discharge papers there wasn't much more I could do. If I could've stayed in, finished school and got my commission then I'd def. be in the Army still. My MOS was pretty badass and my unit was filled with some good guys.

You could have made the sacrifice. You chose not to.
You decided your obligation to yourself was more important than your obligation to your country.

Most men serve without having special conditions "written in" to their contracts. That wasn't good enough for you.

If you will not even sacrifice a few years of your life, a few dollars, and a personal perogative, how are we to believe you will sacrifice your very life when your duty to your nation requires it?

Eturnal has always been an armchair tough guy. This shouldn't surprise anyone.

Like I said before... I didn't have a whole lot of say in the matter. I get a letter in the mail saying, "Virginia isn't going to pay for your tuition because of budget cuts" and I go to my CO and say, "Um, this isn't cool because I wanted to get my commission and I have this written in my contract." My CO tries to get my tuition (because its in my contract) and it turned into some legal mess... and then instead of upholding their end of the contract I got cut. It is what it is. Shit happens.

Just so I'm clear though, you're not saying that people who don't serve are pussies...you just think they would cease to be pussies if they served, because the military would mold them into hardened dicks? ;)

In all seriousness, you are stating that having everyone serve in the military would make everyone less pussifiied. Probably true. If you go through military training, you do become more of a badass. Militaristic societies are inherently full of badassery (See: Sparta) However, you seem to also be implying that anyone who would rather use diplomacy (or "making friends" with our "enemies") to further America's interests as being a pussy. While some person who just wants to destroy any country that would threaten America enemies is somehow a badass?

To me it seems like you're putting too much value into brawn and not enough into intellect and ingenuity. Truly great nations should how and when to use both effectively; something America has rarely been able to accomplish.
