Who knew all it took to get a major breakthrough in AIDS was an ocean of Mountain Dew, vast forests of Cheetos and numerous peripherals broken in nerd rage?

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

I'm not saying it's not, but if I had a dollar for every "huge step" or "miracle breakthrough" with AIDS I would be laying off workers to move my factories overseas while those same workers argues that I needed tax cuts.

I thought the already had a cure for AIDS? It's money, right? That's why Magic Johnson is still doing just fine.

Although I'm sure we all wish it would happen, I don't see Big Pharm letting it happen.

Why? Couldn't they in-theory, make a ton of money off of an AIDS cure?

considering that aids doesn't cripple you like say, polio did, they probably make more money keeping hiv from getting full blown aids.

but who knows.

People don't die from aids, they die from opportunistic diseases. Not only do aids patients need a ton of medication (which can change as time goes on), but they also need to deal with being more susceptible to other sicknesses (which require yet more medicine).

The other problem (for pharm) is that aids isn't as big in the first world as it used to be. It's still rampant in the third world, but hey those people are poor so there's no reason to cure their diseases. If a medical disease was tailor made for the benefit of pharmaceutical companies, it would be aids. Someone may find a cure, but it'll be one of the countries that care more about people than profit, so it's not gonna happen here.

Curing diseases does not make you money. Selling placebo drugs and "stopping the progression of X" does.

Chicken and egg.

AIDS destroys your immune system and leaves you susceptible to other sicknesses since you have no defense. Technically the other thing kills you, but AIDS is equally culpable.

If you cure aids, you don't need to cure the diseases. If you cure the diseases and not aids, you double-dip with a lifetime addict. It's a pretty significant difference to a pharmaceutical company.

You make more money selling fish than you do selling fishing lessons.
