People don't die from aids, they die from opportunistic diseases. Not only do aids patients need a ton of medication (which can change as time goes on), but they also need to deal with being more susceptible to other sicknesses (which require yet more medicine).
The other problem (for pharm) is that aids isn't as big in the first world as it used to be. It's still rampant in the third world, but hey those people are poor so there's no reason to cure their diseases. If a medical disease was tailor made for the benefit of pharmaceutical companies, it would be aids. Someone may find a cure, but it'll be one of the countries that care more about people than profit, so it's not gonna happen here.
