No in reality, clearly the education system in America is also fucked up...but it's not old people with guaranteed jobs that are preventing the youth from entering the workforce...I think it's more a lack of jobs in general, or a lack of demand for people with non-professional degrees.

I still think that places like Greece and France (note: not equating the two situations Tuhl...I would have said "respectively" if I were) are slightly worse off than the US at this point. The US certainly is headed down that road though.

Greece, quite possibly. France, no.

They have unrest amongst the young just like we do. The ones that are actually employed have six weeks of vacation, health benefits, and an achievable retirement age. Also their mass transit sucks way less balls.

Agreed. European population centers didn't develop around a car culture and didn't have as much fucking LAND as the US. Hence why our mass transit is so shitty and inefficient...and why cities like Houston are able to exist as basically one big suburb.

That's one thing I really wish the US would wake up and learn from Europe.

Could say the same about a capitalist society.

Socialist =/= communist. A moderate socialist society is the most likely to be reasonably successful.

France, Germany and Scandinavia (moderate socialist) aren't perfect, but they are far more stable and offer their citizens better lives than pretty much anything else out there, while maintaining a reasonable level of economic competitiveness and social and technological progress.

There's laws against that now. I mean, you were right 90 years ago. But rails that old wouldn't alleviate modern problems.

Part of the reason long-distance trains are so shitty is because of American safety regulations. Trains in this country have to be able to withstand some unreasonable amount of impact force to be deemed safe, probably because railroad crossings are so poorly designed that idiots with a deathwish can ignore the barrier. As a result, fast European trains don't meet the standards, and the American equivalent is far too heavy (and inefficient) to get anywhere near the same speeds.

I see what you did there. But really, the current system is far more conservative. Rather than adjusting to accommodate for existing rapid trains, which they could then purchase from competent train-producers (Japan or France), the USA insists on developing its own rapid train, which results in specific American corporations making a nice profit off the development contract. The train is inevitably shit, because America sucks at trains, and train fares stay stupidly high throughout the country.
