So what's wrong with the customer always being right?

If it completely didn't matter, okay...if your rights were being violated, okay...if you were being "unduly put upon", okay...but being asked to be meticulous is just not too much.

I mean, isn't that entitlement right there? You think you're better than having to do your job properly? What makes you think you're better than the job you're doing?

I work in a concession stand and it's disgusting. However, you do some times have to try your own food to ensure it's of the highest quality possible for your customers.

I don't get bitched at for anything ever.

Because I'm fucking great at my job.

I remember working at the concession stand at a movie theater a few years back.

Man it was hard to give a fuck.

Sweeping and mopping the floors are necessary and part of my job, I do them well. Scrubbing between tiny space between floor boards for over a half hour is not.

We don't lose customers over the state of our floor. If somebody walks into the store, while I'm working, and complains about the minuscule dirt on the floor, I'll politely tell them to fuck off.

Nobody's talking about allergies. If you had any idea what you were talking about, you'd realize the extreme precautions that are made when a ticket comes back and people have food allergies. Not to mention when I work with any sort of chocolate, nut, or other common allergic products, I either go wash my hands thoroughly or put on gloves if I'm in the weeds, only to wash my hands later.

Do you honestly think that people work with hands covered in tomatoes while they're working on something like onions? Anyone who works like that will probably get thrown out immediately (then again, I've never seen this happen because people who work in kitchens tend to know what the hell they're doing).

You're changing your question - going from asking about food and drink you brought in, to tasting food for practical reasons. In answer to your latter phrasing: put dates on the boxes and go by the policy. If you still don't know, ask whoever's in charge.

If only everything was so simple. Not everyone dates things (they're supposed to, but it happens) and if you ask whoever's in charge, they're going to tell you to taste it and look at you like you're retarded.

I'd much rather keep a drink in my station or far away from arm's reach with a lid than having to leave the line multiple times in the night to go to the server's station and pick something up (which you should never be seen doing anyways).

EDIT:

I really shouldn't be surprised you're arguing with the people who, you know, work in restaurants, about working in restaurants.

PS: I'd look into finding another job if you don't like it. Locally-owned, casual joints are a more laid-back atmosphere and personally, I'd never get a job at a chain place (unless it was somewhere where I could get a lot of experience, like Cheesecake Factory or, better yet, a hotel).

I worked at a pizza shack for 8 years and never once did I use gloves. We had a 2 sets of measuring cups for all of the toppings so 2 people could use them instead of waiting when things got busy. There was about 10 different things we could measure and the only time we wiped them clean was after pineapples because it was wet and that taste follows everything. Any other time we wiped them clean was purely self-decision based. The first 4 years or so we were required to wear standard logo hats. The owner never bought more for new people and never made us wear hair nets so eventually nobody was wearing these hats. Hand washing was encouraged and enforced.

As for cleanup, it was very basic and nothing was ever super thorough. Generally once a month we (or whoever was working) had to scrub floors or make them look "better" because the flour would leave yellow spots on wall edges. We had plastic walls so cleaning those was generally easy enough.

Never once did I think that this place was "ew gross" to the point that it would affect the food or customers who walked inside who could see where we worked.

Yup, the more you deal with middle management the more you realize there are two types. Those looking to move up on your back, and those who just don't want to get shit from above. I imagine the floors were brought up by her bosses, either praised or scolded, and she just doesn't want to get crap about it because she knows they look at it.

Working at Wendy's and AMC, it was hard to give a fuck...but I did nonetheless. I guess that's why by the time I left both places they wanted to make me a manager.

You have to take pride in your work, I think, no matter how shitty it is, because it's the little things that will fulfill you. I remember at AMC, there was this little old couple and they couldn't find their theatre. So, I looked at their tickets, and lead them right to it, held the old man's cain while he sat down, and then offered to get them a refill of their drink (without them having to get up and go to the concession stand for it). I thought nothing of it - I was just doing my job and making sure they had the best movie viewing experience possible.

Well, apparently they called in and raved to the GM about me. Yeah, I didn't get any extra money out of it, and the pat on the back by the GM was like "meh"...but the point is, it made me feel good to do a job, even though it's a shitty paying job, well.

It feels like this needs a deep voiced black man going "AWWWW YEAH" after this.

I'm pretty sure every restaurant I've been to in the last 5-10 years has had a notice somewhere on their menu, or on a sign or something that says they 'cannot guarantee that any food that comes out of their kitchen won't contain ingredients that may cause allergic reaction.'

Pretty pathetic how some people will really just attempt to shake businesses and individuals down for money over just about everything.

So it passes to the employees - who won't be financially liable - to do all that can be done to mitigate risk.
