In a market economy, anything with a value in currency is equivalent to anything and everything else that currency buys.
That you are not interested in the skins is irrelevant.
What is relevant is the tremendous inflationary pressure that $$$ for gold equivalents puts on the entire economy. Everything functional becomes so expensive there is no way you can afford it in a timely manner without resorting to $$$.

The entire POINT of a market economy is that you can do just that. You can get rich and powerful selling Thneeds and
change that currency into anything you want. That is both the strength and weakness of a market economy.
