In all seriousness, we're still fucked.

Yes, Obama was the lesser of two evils, and thankfully backwards social policies won't be in the White House for the next 4 years. But the Republicans still have control of congress.

Since their one goal the last 4 years was to prevent Obama's re-election, and they failed, I hope they can stop blocking every move he tries to make.

I don't think they will though. The democrats have a majority in the senate now, which is nice...but Congress is going to continue to be the biggest road block.

I just see Republicans having a temper tantrum over this for the next 4 years. And Eturnal, that's why I won't take your bet.

There's a reason we have a bicameral legislature, and a political system which has ways to stop total control of a country.

The Senate has been Democratic majority since the 109th Congress, and they're just as bad when it comes to cock-blocking the Republican House proposals. A President, of course, would try their damnedest to bridge the divide and work with both sides (like Clinton with Gingrich), but we've seen an unwillingness from both the President and the Democrats in the Senate to attempt to consider Republican proposals. Even Harry Reid was preemptively calling for cock-blocking Republican efforts if Romney was elected President.

So in your mind, no progress is better than progress that you aren't 150% happy with? Am I wrong?

No no, I get it. When Republicans won't budge it's Obama's fault for not budging.

Did you see how Obamacare was bastardized so he could get it passed?

Did you see how Republicans held the country hostage over the debt ceiling?

But yeah, I guess that's okay as long as Obama isn't accomplishing anything.

It's funny (or sad and pathetic?) how you keep giving the same one-liners no matter how hard and how many times they're debunked. It's been explained to you why Obamacare is flawed but better than the immediate alternatives.

The bicameral legislature was never meant to be a means towards logjam, which is why we have the veto override. It doesn't work anymore because the FFs expressly said that a two-party system would be the nation's undoing.

The GOP doesn't use the bicameral mechanic to stop legislation, they use filibuster and esoteric procedural rules that are not part of the Constitution but have become part of the Senate's tradition (which is also why VPs don't hang around the Senate as they are in theory supposed to), so the bicameral argument doesn't even apply.

Fwiw, filibustering by hypocritical right-wingers was a major factor in the fall of the Roman Republic. Go read about the political career of Cato the Younger.

I think that it's funny how you complain about the abuse of esoteric procedural tricks right after telling USD how great Obamacare is. If it weren't for esoteric procedural tricks Obamacare wouldn't exist.

Now Ginsburg and Breyer can safely retire.

Maybe we'll get lucky and Kennedy will also retire.

And if we're really lucky, Scalia will die.

The argument that the Civil War could not have been caused by slavery because only a very few Southerners owned slaves is actually correct.

In reality, most Southerners went to war not because they owned slaves or sympathized with those who did or were afraid the North would steal their patch of mud, but because the South is disproportionately comprised of ignorant savages who fear and hate anyone better than them, which is most of the world, including the North, which became more powerful not because they struck oil or dropped bombs on people but because they were smarter and more progressive. In that sense the Southerners are just like the Saudis or Afghans.

150 years of history hasn't changed that.

Let me show you some more maps:

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/pu ... s/hag2.gif
http://eyeonhousing.files.wordpress.com ... slide2.jpg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_ta ... g_by_state

The same ignorant people who vote GOP and cry about big guvmint are the same people who are heavily subsidized by that government - and the states that know better - because of the profound inability of the policies they advocate to move their states forward. They are the same people who went to war 150 years ago to defend a system of involuntary labor that kept most white people poor and idle in the misguided belief that the North was going to somehow take their nothing away from them.

If tomorrow the South seceded from the North, again, and we let them go...the North's finances would instantly be the best in the world, and the South would be as badly off as Greece. And the Democrats would get something like 80% of the vote every election (and inevitably fragment into a series of parties comparable to those dominating Western Europe).

Just think about that for a moment, Azelma.

If you go by the popular vote, most of those states are differing shades of purple.

But let's label everyone in a red state as an ignorant racist anyway, because thats very open minded and progressive of us.
