I never understood that. I don't follow celebrities or movies/TV though.

Actors fall in the same broad category as revolutionaries and enterpreneurs. They dont need to wear the mantle of social legitimacy (literally, as it were) because they have personal power.

As someone who runs a startup, you're right...wearing a tshirt is commonplace. Also, I'm an entrepreneur who wears nice shirts and pants o/

I know you'll argue to the death about this, because you're stubborn and want the world to be something that it isn't. Dressing well definitely helps.

Let me ask you, if 10 people are in a room, 9 of them are wearing tshirts and ripped jeans, and one of them is dressed in nice slacks and a collared button down shirt. Who stands out?

Alright, scratch that, you know what it really is? Fashion is a reflection of self confidence. This is undeniable fact. I guarantee the most people who dress really well have significantly more self confidence than those who dress like slobs. I can cite my own life experiences. Being clinically depressed in college, I wore baggy jeans and hoodies. Every. Day. I looked like shit, girls didn't talk to me, I lost a job, it was a disaster.

One day, my sister (fashion major), told me she wanted to take me out and buy me an outfit. She knew my body type, what colors would look good on me, etc. We didn't go to any fancy store...it was Urban Outfitters. She found me a nice pair of jeans (slim), a nice solid green tshirt, and a black sport coat on the sale rack.

I'll never forget looking in the mirror and thinking "wow, I actually look pretty good. Damn." It was eye opening. Now I didn't become some crazy guido primping for an hour every day, but I started to look for clothes that looked better on me. I stopped falling out of bed in the morning and grabbing the baggiest hoodie I could find. -- Next thing you know, I was graduating from college, had multiple job interviews, going on dates, coming to work dressed well and confident.

TL,DR: I'm not saying the clothes make the man, but a man can express himself through his looks, and it's a much better judge of success than you'd think. Go ahead Aestu, show up to an interview in ripped jeans and a ratty tshirt. I guarantee you'll lose out on the job to someone dressed nicely, even if you're smarter than them. Looks matter in this world, and they're a reflection of who you are.

Unless you are Mark Zuckerberg and can code your way to success you're going to need to impress someone some day. And by the way, Zuckerberg wears suits from time to time.

This is what you refuse to see, you cling to your ideals...it's why you will fail if you don't start thinking more. You want to be an accountant? You want to run your own accountancy business? You'd better dress the part. No one in their right mind would open up their books to some slob. Absolutely not.

Again Aestu sees the world as black and white. If you dress nicely, you're just a corporate lackey with no spine. No, true visionaries dress like shit. What a load of BS.

Black and white? So now we're talking about Pokemon or race in America or what? I dont follow. You said, "$300 suit" and i said "short of being a slob".

Actually it is funny you mention it because it is one of the hard lessons ive learned that it is sometimes necessary to do so. I plan to buy a suit when i move to cincinnati, to impress two specific individuals, some trailer trash i want to convince to become a live-in, and the chair at UCin.

Now, why dont you tell me what those two individuals have in common from my point of view?

Yes it is sometimes necessary. But i dont believe it should be a cornerstone of life by any stretch of the imagination. Basically i prefer to dress like an east german.

There's a difference between looking nice and wasting a lot of god damned money on clothes.

This. My "expensive" clothes are usually ridiculous purchases by my mother. She once bought me a pair of $500 sunglasses. $500. I break sunglasses all the time and pick up new pairs at the Dollar store or swap meet. I told her she should have bought me a $5 pair and given me the extra $495. Plus, the designer shades are ugly. Uuuuuuuugly.

Seems I misunderstood you Aestu, so my apologies.

Yes, there's a difference between looking nice and spending loads of money on clothes for no reason.

It's why I am good at perusing clearance racks. If I can find something that looks just as good on me as something you paid way more for...I win.

You probably think they are both idiots who are weak willed and able to be influenced by appearances. You need something from each of them. Therefore, wearing a suit will further stack the deck in your favor since you will already be smarter than them and able to dominate the conversation.

Am I close?

Its simpler than that. Its that i dont respect them.

the fact they find a suit more convincing than anything i might say is testament to their stupidity.

I dunno, I have a pair of $275 shoes and they're the bee's knees.

My sneakers last about 3 years (roughly 1400 walking miles, does not include running). They cost a bit less than 40 bucks.

I have dress shoes. They were relatively inexpensive and nobody's ever commented that they don't cost $300. Unless you're shining them, you probably won't notice the difference. If a judge or a partner is staring at my feet, I've got him on the ropes already.

I've got friends in academia and in San Francisco. They dress however the fuck they feel like it, and everyone takes them seriously because they do the work expected of them efficiently. If you're a programmer and you're good, or you're a mathematician and you're good, or you're a quant and you're good, or hell if you're a professor and you're good, you can wear shorts and a t-shirt every day of your life and nobody's ever going to talk down to you for it.

I'm buying shoes that are ~$150, but those are different because I don't want to die in my line of work and I also don't want to burn through my knees and lower back before I'm 35.
