Five reasons:
1) I don't like the taste of beer and I hate the burn of alcohol.
2) I hate feeling out of control... or not 100% in control, I guess.
3) I can have just as much fun without drinking myself.
4) I prefer to let my wife drink so I opt to be her DD.
5) Seen too many alcoholics in my life and I'd hate to even come close to walking that path.

Patience. The processes leading to the legalization of marijuana have already begun. I'm not going to look this up in order to back myself but if you read the arguments for/against the legalization of alcohol during prohibition, you'd find an amazing parallel to the current arguments posed for/against weed. All you need to know, in these tough economic times for state governments, is the answer to this question: Would the legalization, regulation and taxation of marijuana production and sales help the fiscal bottom line? The answer is clearly yes. If you factor in the money saved releasing those incarcerated under current laws, the funds spent by law enforcement fighting marijuana, and the reduction in crime currently caused by large cartels smuggling and dealing, you can really begin to see some large-scale benefits. Follow the bouncing buck; it leads to legalization.

While Marijuana isn't their sole market, I'd wager it does comprise quite a big chunk of it so it would be interesting to see how they would react to such a move by the US.

hell i'm all for the legalization of soft drugs (I.E.: Mainly refering to pot, lsd, shrooms, salvia, etc.) Basically the drugs that it is technically impossible to overdose on. Figure it would end some/most of the shenanigans that result from these *teenagers in distress* and the 5-6 years of public education tell us that drugs are bad and such.

Salvia shouldn't be under that umbrella unless it's the actual leaf. Extracts over 10x are detrimental to what the plant is capable of. If you're going to pretend you're a shaman, then respect what you're smoking.

PS: The giant fractal of the universe is interesting. Mainly because I'm directly linked to it.

PPS: Lucinth's close to the reasoning. It's called the devil's weed to counter its benefits. As mentioned previously, it was part of the anointing process, enabling people to experience "the holy spirit". It connects you on a spiritual level, and when you're repressing the flow of information, you tend to not want people linked to the truth.

PPPS: 60% of the eyes reading this post will glaze over.

I get high like twice a year and it's pretty fun, though I hardly qualify as a weed authority. I can tell you that as a college student (well, graduate student now), illegality is no deterrent. People smoke nonstop in their rooms and cover the smoke detectors, and no one ever lodges any complaints. Considering the sheer volume of consumption, someone who could be regulating it all is missing out on a gold mine.

Do you let people resell weed without a license and, if not, what is the penalty for selling weed? The reason I'm curious is for the quality of the herb...

Somebody mentioned earlier that the cigarette companies are primed and ready for the launch, and I agree that they are. I think you'll eventually be able to buy this stuff under the same sort of restrictions that control alcohol sales. Go into the store, "Gimme a pack of Diesel", or whatever you're smoking, show your ID, done. The consistency of the product will be at an all-time high. All the cartels and small players will be crushed, imo. I'm sure the state will license/tax growers, manufacturers, sellers, and buyers. They'll leave no vein untapped.

So is thread about whether marijuana should be legal or how to react to those who commit a crime by using an illegal substance?

every single time i've smoked pot i got paranoid as hell and felt like an idiot for laughing at things that weren't funny. every time i've gotten extremely drunk i've felt awesome for making jokes that obviously weren't funny and then hit on fat chicks.

although, i'm similar to mayo, these days i don't drink alcohol unless there's some kind of complimenting food involved. beer especially. wine is great too, but there's nothing better than finding a tiny microbrewery in the middle of nowhere and finding out how amazing their beer would go with a fat steak. i'll always remember the day i was visiting a friend in Madison, WI and i discovered Spotted Cow beer. i wanted to make a lake out of it and skate on it, then melt it in the springtime and drink it.

Verily, I have often laughed at weaklings who thought themselves proud because they had no claws.

I definitely agree with what you're saying Boredalt. It's taken a while, but the US is definitely on the track to complete legalization. I believe it's 13 states that now have sort of law regarding legal medicinal Marijuana. I wonder though, if the Federal government will ever come in and make a law, or if it will be left up to the individual states. I know California has been exploring the multitude of ways to use the revenues generated from medicinal marijuana sales to help with their state's budget crisis.

As for weed itself, like anything, there can be negative effects. Paranoia is the big one I notice people having issue with. When i was in my smoking heyday in college, I started to "geek out" every now and then (after months and months of smoking multiple times a day)...like having panic attacks. So I think like anything else, too much of a good thing is bad. That being said, I don't think it should be cause for the drug to be illegal when alcohol is legal...and their are certainly alcoholics still around.
