Typhooning can not exist without Moonkins. So therefore, you won because of the Moonkin's Typhoon or because of the Moonkins. Typhoon can not stand alone as it is a direct effect of the Moonkins. This all just seems like a huge attempt to refuse to making a mistake and on that note . . .

I'm not talking about grammar. I'm talking about in game. You stated that you won because of typhoon as if it were fact and not an example, sorry if I misread that. The fact is, typhoon can not exist without moonkins. So you won because of moonkins. That is all I was saying.

I'm not a grammar nazi, but it seems to me that you could use the gerund as a noun, but you didn't. You used it as a verb.

However, like I've already stated, I also don't have a problem with the way you phrased it. Language is the art of communication, and so long as you communicated what you intended to say effectively and, if necessary (though not necessary in this instance) with correct precision, then you accomplished that art regardless of conventions.

Language evolves. Conventions hold many dialects to be incorrect while they are more correct for those speaking them than the "proper" language would be. For example, y'all is not a word, but it's wholly understood in the south. It's technically incorrect, but entirely effective.

I'd say stop trying to twist the sentence into being technically correct and just accept that no one likes grammar nazis and you got your point across perfectly well.

Edit: just to put a finer point on it, I doubt anyone read that sentence and was left scratching their head, wondering what was happening at the gate.

This got a giggle from me

I was in a bitchy mood and had just finished grading some papers and editing a book. Plus, it is Aestu. He's an easy target. I love how when he is wrong, he can't accept it.

Aestu, I know we aren't supposed to use facts on the Internet, but I can certainly come to the back of the class and help you if you'd like.

If you change the nouns and verbs in the sentence to something more simplistic, you may be able to see your error more clearly.

"... there is four dogs walking down the street." This would be incorrect. "...there are four dogs walking down the street" would be the correct way to phrase it.
