Actually Mike you kinda nailed the thing about it. It's not just the song, it's the album, and in fact the four albums (including that one) up to that point.
Led Zeppelin was a great band and that album kind of culminated their greatest music and that song kinda culminated the album.
It's a good song, but taken out of the context of the band in general it's just a good song.
Agree 9000%
If you listen to Stairway only, you are left with the "damn that was a pretty good song but why the hype". If you listed to all of the Zepplin albums and or see any live video of them you understand just how big they were. If John Bonham had not passed when he did there is no telling how long they would have kept going, but damn what a legacy of music.
Listening to the guitar parts in most of their songs you are left trying to figure out if there are one or two guitarist. The vocals have been emulated in many ways but never perfected (yes I am talking about you David Coverdale) and the only drummer that even comes close is his son. John Paul Jones unfortunately is the odd man out because of his versatility. He played bass, keyboards, and assisted on many othe rinstruments but because he was the quiet on of the band as far as flash goes he was somewhat left out of alot of conversations. Just try to keep up with Jimmy Paige and see what kind of skill his bass playing took. I have all of the original albums on CD, the box set, BBC releases and a few others but my prize is IV on vinyl that my dad bought when he was in the Navy. It is packed away at my moms house because I dont want my kids playing around with it and my mom claims it is hers, lol.
