It was good, I'm not really floored like some of you seem to have been but I'm guessing I lost a lot of the experience since I didn't listen to it at a young age or something.

I like Stairway to Heaven, the buildup of the tempo and whatnot, but I don't get the whole OMGWTF cult following of the song, treated like the anthem of rock. Maybe I would have a greater appreciation if I played guitar. Same with Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, all of my favorite PF songs are on different albums :(

San Tropez on Meddle is fairly awesometastical. It's what Jimmy Buffett would sound like if he weren't some douchebag fatass wanna-be beach-bum philosopher.

In short, San Tropez is an awesome song and Jimmy Buffett needs to be covered in paper cuts and drowned in a tub of Margarita.

Actually Mike you kinda nailed the thing about it. It's not just the song, it's the album, and in fact the four albums (including that one) up to that point.

Led Zeppelin was a great band and that album kind of culminated their greatest music and that song kinda culminated the album.

It's a good song, but taken out of the context of the band in general it's just a good song.

Agree 9000%

If you listen to Stairway only, you are left with the "damn that was a pretty good song but why the hype". If you listed to all of the Zepplin albums and or see any live video of them you understand just how big they were. If John Bonham had not passed when he did there is no telling how long they would have kept going, but damn what a legacy of music.

Listening to the guitar parts in most of their songs you are left trying to figure out if there are one or two guitarist. The vocals have been emulated in many ways but never perfected (yes I am talking about you David Coverdale) and the only drummer that even comes close is his son. John Paul Jones unfortunately is the odd man out because of his versatility. He played bass, keyboards, and assisted on many othe rinstruments but because he was the quiet on of the band as far as flash goes he was somewhat left out of alot of conversations. Just try to keep up with Jimmy Paige and see what kind of skill his bass playing took. I have all of the original albums on CD, the box set, BBC releases and a few others but my prize is IV on vinyl that my dad bought when he was in the Navy. It is packed away at my moms house because I dont want my kids playing around with it and my mom claims it is hers, lol.

9 level 90s and 10 85s, Damn I need another hobby.

the best PF album is Wish You Were Here anyway. Which is funny considering the title track (and Have a Cigar) aren't as good as the rest of the album.

I second this. My favorite three, in this order, are Wish You Were Here, The Wall, then Dark Side of the Moon.

I mean, I love all three, but yeah.

edit: Also, Wish You Were Here is one of the first and favorite songs I learned to play on guitar.

Wish You Were Here is definitely the best, but Dark Side is better than The Wall. The Final Cut was pretty good, too, but I doubt most have heard it since it's not as popular. It was the last one with Roger Waters, and was probably the closest they ever came to a "political" album.

I don't even listen to Pink Floyd stoned. I don't like it. It's not bad though.

There is only one song one ever needs to listen to while flying.

"Ok we aren't such things and birds are pretty advanced. They fly and shit from anywhere they want. While we sit on our automatic toilets, they're shitting on people and my car while a cool breeze tickles their anus. That's the life."

Pretty much agree with Tuhl and Mikebro. Dark Side is good, but not even close to my favourite Pink Floyd album. I put Saucerful and Animals and Wish and Meddle and The Wall all ahead of it. Like i have all the albums there, but the only time Dark Side ever gets a listen of any sort is when i feel like doing my very best Clare Torry impersonation for my unwilling neighbours.
Shine On is about the best music ever and thus Wish You Were Here is the best album ever. Pretty sure my parents played it non stop when i was in the womb.

I never got into the Led Zeppelin hype either. Not even Wayne's World could make me really give a shit. Of course stairway was one of the first songs i tried to learn to play. It's a very good song.
